Stallard/HSB Juniors Program Start October 15

Part two of the excellent (and popular) HSB juniors development program begins October 15, 2007. Michelle and Aland have created a wide array of clinics, private lesson opportunities, conditioning programs, leagues, team support, and elite training for junior players of all ages and levels. For more information, schedules, and application materials, call (830) 598-2591 or email mstallard@hsbresort.com.

MFCTA Women's Doubles Schedule

Nancy Herrington, Julie Docherty, and Jo Lynn Dyer have developed a fledgling MFCTA women's doubles league that plays Wednesday nights at Marble Falls High School until October 3. After that, the schedule and location are a bit iffy, since the courts are due to be demolished for the new MFHS stadium. The current schedule is posted in the MFCTA section (CLICK HERE).

You have to be an MFCTA member to participate, so join up.

Mixed-Up Tennis Benefit/Tourney

Marble Falls High School and the Relay for Life will sponsor a mixed doubles tournament for all ages at 6:00 PM on Friday, June 8, 2007. Half the proceeds will go to the Relay for Life; the remainder will support Marble Falls Community Tennis Association (MFCTA).

The format will be mixed doubles, two out of three sets, double elimination. The fee is $15 per player ($30 per team) for MFCTA members, $20 each for nonmembers. Register by May 24. Everyone gets a t-shirt with an original Mark Moran design, which Mark will autograph upon request.

For registration materials or more information, Click Here or call Mark (830-798-9257), Nancy Herrington (830-693-8047), or Julie Docherty (830-798-3601).

Note to HSB players: Please register. I'd really like to see some of our Resort mixed doubles elite kick some MF tail and put those guys from the "wrong side of the lake" back in their places. That means you, Muffy and Chad.

Note to Marble Falls/Burnet area players: Who the 'ell do those Resort snobs think they're dealing with. Get registered, put a tire iron in your tennis bag, and meet 'em at the MFHS courts.

Let's get ready to rumble.

Horseshoe Bay Hosting Gran Prix Jr. Clay Court Open

Horseshoe Bay will host a Capitol Area Tennis Association (CATA) juniors tournament May 26-28, 2007. The event will offer valuable tournament experience on red clay, uncommon (but important) for Texas juniors. There will be both singles and doubles play. Michelle Stallard is tournament director.

Click here to go to the official tournament website (tournament ID no. 809659807 in the TennisLink system). Online registration is available, and registration closes at 11:59 PM on Monday, May 21.

Kids' Kourts Koming to Horseshoe Bay

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Horseshoe Bay Tennis Center will soon be the first facility in the United States to build permanent children's courts. The new courts, slated for the space now occupied by the deteriorated and non-usable hard courts above our clay courts, will look like normal ones, only smaller. Kids 10 and under will use bigger balls and smaller racquets. The modified courts and equipment allow much longer rallies for new young players, offsetting the frustration that's common in kids who quit tennis early because they can't enjoy a rally. Justin Henin-Hardenne learned on similar courts in Belgium, as did some other great players.

Sal Castillo, USTA Texas Tennis Service Representative for the Central and West Texas region, demonstrated the concept at the January 27 MFCTA kick-off party. USTA is funding the courts and will promote them (and the Tennis Center) in various media. The USTA will encourage HSB to have children's tournaments and host camps.

There is also talk of a new backboard, perhaps with a net to catch errant balls (not a problem for me, of course). If USTA won't fund it, Michelle will approach the Resort. In the meantime, she has a supply of dead balls that members can use on the current backboard with no worries about feeding them to the pond on the other side.

All this sounds great to me. It will add tennis activities, create another unique facet of HSB, encourage membership and resort traffic, and dress up a corner of the Tennis Center that has long been an eyesore.

2007 Eagles & Aces Classic Coming Up

The annual Eagles & Aces golf and tennis classic, benefitting the Highland Lakes Boys and Girls Club of Marble Falls, will be held Monday, April 23, 2007, at the Horseshoe Bay Tennis Center. The format will be a time-limited (30 minutes) king-of-the-hill, played in five rounds with splitting of teams after each round. Entry is limited to the first 48 players of either gender.

This year, to accommodate the mix of stronger and not-so-strong players, entrants can choose to play all matches on either hard or clay courts. Ideally, the number on each surface will be about equal.

The cost is $75 per player, checks made payable to the Boys and Girls Club. The fee covers balls, refreshments, dinner, and prizes for winners and runners up on both surfaces.

Call Gil Blount (830-596-8142) for questions or an entry form, or just print out the following and mail it with your check to Boys and Girls Club of the Highland Lakes, P.O. Box 190, Marble Falls, TX 78654.

Blakes, Fish, Bryans Entertain in Austin

Those who braved Austin's 70-degree weather and low winds to get to the Austin Convention Center on December 15 had a great time watching exhibitions of world-class singles and doubles in an up-close-and-personal venue. After a pretty funny opening act, the FedEx All-American Tennis Shootout got underway. The Bryan Brothers beat James and Thomas Blake decisively in a doubles pro set, then James unleashed a flurry of . . . well, he defeated third-grade-educated Mardi Fish in straight sets (to get that joke, you had to have been there). Lionel Ritchie, in town for Andy Roddick's fundraiser the following night, took photos from the sidelines. Andy was there for part of the show, trying to blend into the crowd in the front row.

Ritchie didn't send me any of his photos, so I'm posting my own dazzling diadems of Pulitzer potential pulchritude:

This should be easy. All I have to do is dust 'em back with my serve.

Bryan, Schmyan; who are those guys?
Oh, those Bryan Brothers.
Mardy Fish demonstrates backhand follow-through.
James Blake demonstrates forehan . . . Omigosh, the ball exploded!
Mardi Fish's service motion. (These guys are fast!)
But they slow down when they're thirsty.
Mary? Stop! DON'T WALK BEHIND HIM!

Horseshoe Bay Tennis Banquet Sunday Feb. 18, Non-Members Welcome

Horseshoe Bay Tennis Center will host its annual Tennis Banquet Sunday evening, February 18, 5:00 PM, LOCATION TO BE ANNOUNCED (probably either the Resort or the Marriott). Nonmembers are invited (including folks who often play at the Tennis Center, Michelle's adult clinic attendees, and ambassadors from the MFCTA), however, the banquet activities will focus on people who have been active in HSB Tennis Center leagues, programs, etc.  Also, this is an adult banquet; Michelle is having a pizza party for the juniors this summer.

Chicken Marsala, salad, and New York cheesecake are on the menu for a paltry $19.50 + 22% gratuity + 6.25% tax. Add up all those numbers and sign up in the HSB Pro Shop, or call (830) 598-2591.

Portable Defibrillator Classes

The defibrillator has arrived. Free CPR and AED training classes will be offered December 7th and 19th from 1PM to 5PM at the City of HSB conference room (NOT the Tennis Center). Please sign up by calling the pro-shop at 598-2591.

AED for HSB Tennis Center

AED means Automated External Defibrillator, and it has nothing to do with your swing. It's an emergency treatment for heart attack. You see them in airports, on planes, and in other public places, and they save lives. With an AED, a person with little or no training (such as most tennis players) can often quickly re-start a stopped (or terribly erratic) heart. Pat Dickey and Myrna Floyd are spearheading an effort to place one at the Tennis Center. Pat would like to hear from you if you want to learn more, and especially if you would be willing to make a small donation for the purchase and training (including training interested folks in basic cardiac life support (BCLS -- used to be called "CPR"). Email her at pat@tonkawood.com (just click on the email address).

Dickey, Kithil Take Second at GTC

Bill Dickey and Dave Kithil, both of Marble Falls (well, Bill's horse ranch is a few miles south), placed second in 3.5 men's singles at the 2006 Georgetown Tennis Center Fall Championships (September 22-24). It gets better: They were registered for 3.0 and had to play up a division. Congratulations!

Memorial Tournament & Reitz Barbecue

The Annual Memorial celebration of Dick Reitz and other Horseshoe Bay folks who are now playing in Heaven was held Saturday, September 30 (see photos below). The format was team tennis doubles, with each game won getting a point. Six teams of eight players competed in five separate matches (if you can multiply, you know that's a record turnout of 48 players, some from the Reitz family, Blue Lake, Marble Falls & Burnet as well as HSB). The winners were Margie Crier's team, which consisted of Margie, Ingerlise Blount, Barb Daily, Patti Dickey, Jim McNabb, Jim Montz, Randy Myers, Carol Oncken, and Ro Tolar. Michelle and HSB provided fine prizes, and the winners' names will soon be engraved on the trophy that's on display in the pro shop. Each player received a cooler bag suitable for carrying a few beers or Ann Montz's dog (but not both). There was only one casualty: Barb Daily, of the winning team, broke her wrist. This one was for you, Barb.

The Reitz's evening barbecue, with a Mardi Gras theme and Reitz bartenders in funny hats, was a big success. Several "retired" players came, including Mom (Lucile Brock) and Wib Stanford (all the way from San Marcos). Peete mesquite catered (with 7 kinds of pie); more prizes were given out (ask Ray Lesikar what he won, and what he had to do to get it), and a cute little girl danced around in a big t-shirt.

My team deserves special mention because, well, they're my team: Jo Lynn Dyer, Claire Edwards, Wesley Garnett, John Gay, Mike Gregoric, Jennifer Harrison, and Kristi Martinez (rookie of the year). Jo Lynn and Jennifer, a regular doubles team, played every round and amassed lots of points for us.

If you're upset that I didn't post the names of other teams' members, then next time bribe me to be on my team.

If someone has photos of the tournament or the party, please email me a couple and I'll post them.

San Antonio ZAT Results, November 4-5, 2006

Our Juniors performed well in San Antonio early in November. Hannah Mayfield of the Marble Falls High School tennis team captured the consolation title in the girls 16 and under, defeating Victoria Noetzel 6-3, 6-0. Luke Lawson of Horseshoe Bay played above his age group in the boys 12s and won his first round match against Chad Ladewig of Schertz, Texas 6-0, 6-2, before finally losing to the 6th seeded player from Brownsville. Alex Pylypec of Horseshoe Bay beat San Antonio's Ferdinand Herff 6-2, 6-0, then lost to 3rd seed Conor O'Meara of Lakeway.

HSB’s junior tennis team wrapped up their season on November 4th by beating the Westover Hills Club 7-1. Players included Charli Kilpatrick, Erin Burgett, Ryan Johnson, Tristan Wise, Ashley Stallard and Sarah Thomas. Team tennis will start-up again in February, 2007. There are opportunities for junior players ages 8-18. Contact Michelle Stallard in Horseshoe Bay (512-577-3872) for more information.

Roddick Fails to Help Westwood against Horseshoe Bay Juniors

Congratulations! to the Horseshoe Bay juniors who decisively defeated Austin Westwood Country Club on October 29, 2006. Luke Lawson of Horseshoe Bay won 8-1. Michael Holder lost 8-1. Nicole Johnson won in a tie breaker 8-7 (7-5). Ashley Ford won 8-0.

In doubles, Luke and Michael dominated 8-0 and Nicole and Ashley won 8-4.

The Horseshoe Bay players got a surprise glimpse of Andy Roddick, who was finishing a practice round at Westwood as the kids arrived.

The Horseshoe Bay juniors have their final team tennis matches this weekend (November 5), against Circle C & Lost Creek. Check with Michelle for the location.

Luke Lawson and Alex Pylypec will be playing in a San Antonio ZAT tournament this weekend, in the boys 12 and under.

The HSB juniors play in a traveling tennis league which includes recreational teams for boys and girls 14 years old and younger and competitive teams for those 14 years and older. Since horseshoe bay is some distance from Austin, they travel to Austin every Sunday afternoon to play teams such as Barton Creek, Great Hills, Westwood, Circle C, and Austin Tennis Academy. The Sunday, November 5, matches will make up for those that were rained out earlier in the season.

Early October 2006 Tournaments

On October 7 & 8, 2006, four area tennis players played in USTA Junior tournaments. Sarah Mason Thomas and Ryan Johnson, both of Horseshoe Bay, played in the McFarlin Zone Area Tennis Tournament in San Antonio. Ashley Stallard and Tristan Wise played in the Championship Junior Major Zone Tennis tournament in Midland, TX.

Sarah Mason Thomas of Horseshoe Bay played in the girls 12 and under singles division. Sarah is 10 years old, but is playing up a division in order to get points and ranking status in the USTA. She lost her first round match 6-1, 7-6 (1) in a second set tiebreak to the number 2 seeded player, Rachel Miller of San Antonio, but went on to defeat Beatrix Benavides of Laredo (6-2, 7-5) and Lauren Kasper of Austin (6-1, 6-4) to reach the consolation finals. She lost in the finals of the consolation bracket to Hunyeh Hoghoochi of Austin (3-6, 7-6, 6-0).

Ryan Johnson went into the San Antonio ZAT seeded 7th and ranked 167 in the state. He won his first round match against Ben Ficke of San Antonio 6-2, 5-7, 6-4, but lost his second round match to Jacob Lucas of Maxwell, Texas 6-3, 6-2. There were a total of 535 junior players entered in the tournament.

Ashley Stallard, daughter of Horseshoe Bay's Director of Tennis Michelle Stallard, and Tristan Wise of Lakeway, a student of Stallard's, played in their first "Champs" tournament since qualifying in ZAT tournaments this summer. The Midland Championship Junior tournament had 329 junior players competing. The competition gets much more difficult at this level, but both played well.

Ashley lost her first round match to Kati Mdzinarishvili of Amarillo 6-0, 6-1. She fought back in the consolation bracket beating Megan Ortwein of Cypress, Texas 5-7, 6-3, 6-2. She advanced to the semi-finals but lost a nail-biting match against Tori Musngi of Rowlett, Texas in a two set tie-breaker 7-6 (5), 7-6 (7), playing some of the best tennis of her career.

Tristan lost his first match to Davis Plummer of Richardson 6-1, 6-2 and was eliminated in the next round by Jared Waters of Coppell, Texas.

Horseshoe Bay's Luke Lawson is entered in the ZAT tournament in Waco the weekend of October 14.

The USTA limits Juniors to one sanctioned tournament per month.

CATA 2006 Juniors Tour

The Highland Lakes Area had a number of high ranking finalists in the Capital Area Tennis Association (CATA) 2006 Summer Junior Tour. (Thanks to Sallye Johnson for the following information.)

Boys 12 and under -- Tristan Wise finished in second place with 209 points.  Tristan lives in Lakeway but participated in tennis camps and clinics this summer under the direction of Michelle Stallard at Horseshoe Bay and played doubles matches in 14 and under group with Horseshoe Bay's Ryan Johnson.

Boys 14 and under -- Ryan Johnson, Horseshoe Bay, finished in 3rd place with 106 points.  This was the largest division, with 104 boys ages 14.  Ryan is coached by Michelle Stallard and plays on the Faith Academy High School tennis team.

Girls 10 and under -- Sarah Mason Thomas, Horseshoe Bay finished in 2nd place with 149 points.  Sarah is a 5th grader at Faith Academy of Marble Falls and is coached by Michelle Stallard.

Girls 12 and under -- Carley Wilson of Spicewood Texas finished in 3rd place with 171 points, her twin sisters Lexie and Emily Wilson finished in the top 8 as well, Lexie 5th with 80 points and Emily in 8th place with 60 points.  Lexie and Emily played half the year in the girls 10 and under age division and then had to re-qualify in the girls 12 and under, so this was quite an accomplishment.

Girls 14 and under -- 11-year-old Ashley Stallard competed in the Girls 14 and under this summer but because she was promoted to the Champ division at the August ZAT in Richardson (Great, Ashley!), she can no longer play in this division.

Girls 16 and under -- Charli Kilpatrick, Marble Falls finished in 5th place with 100 points.  Charli plays for Marble Falls High School.

Tristan, Ryan, Sarah, Carley, Emily and Lexie all competed in the Round Rock Zone Area Tournament (ZAT) Labor Day weekend in preparation for the CATA 2006 Junior Tour Masters Invitational September 9th and 10th. Tristan Wise won the Boys 12s and Sarah Mason Thomas won the Girls 10s.  Finalists in the CATA Junior Tour Masters Invitational will advance to the Texas Gran Prix State Championships.

Other area juniors who competed in the CATA Junior Tour this summer include Luke Lawson (Horseshoe Bay), Logan Docherty (Horseshoe Bay), Connor Docherty (Horseshoe Bay), Jordan Fisher (Burnet), Chase Penner (Marble Falls), Ashley Ford (Marble Falls), Nicole Johnson (Horseshoe Bay), Savannah Still (Horseshoe Bay), Ashlyn Watts (Spicewood), Brittany Scott (Spicewood), Melanie Fortenberry (Marble Falls), Deanna Hoover (Burnet), Kyleigh Ann Futrell (Marble Falls), Hannah Still (Horseshoe Bay), Kristin Bohannon (Kingsland), Caitlin Schnorrenberg (Horseshoe Bay), Lana Thomas (Horseshoe Bay), and Erin Burgett (Marble Falls).

Congratulations to all those who were successful, and congratulations to Michelle for her excellent coaching, teaching, and clinics.

To view all the CATA results, go to www.austintennis.org and click on Juniors. For information about the round rock tournament, GOOGLE "ZAT Schedule," September, Round Rock.
