Andy Roddick Foundation Launches Tennis Program
for Hill Country Youth
In a Castle Rock press release dated May 1, 2008, Dave Holder wrote that Dr. Lawrence Roddick, Director of Youth Programs for the Andy Roddick Foundation (ARF), has just announced the launch of the foundation's first tennis programs in the Texas Hill Country. The programs are in cooperation with the Boys and Girls Club of the Highland Lakes, and will begin June 2, 2008, at the Marble Falls Middle School courts. The Andy Roddick Youth Tennis Program developed in September, 2007, from the vision of Rene Lacoste, the experience of the Roddick family, and financial support from the Rene Lacoste Foundation, the USTA Tennis & Education Foundation, and the ARF. With the launch of these programs, ARF begins the fundraising campaign to build the Andy Roddick Foundation International Tennis Center at CastleRock Texas in Cottonwood Shores.
"I am in a position to make a difference, and feel a certain responsibility to make one of my goals contributing positively to my communities," said Andy Roddick, founder of ARF. "By helping at-risk and underprivileged children through my foundation, we can make this goal a reality."
After turning professional in 2000, it took Andy only one year to turn his sights off the court and onto his community. In 2001, he began the Andy Roddick Foundation, a charity dedicated to "Helping Children Today for Tomorrow." The goal of the foundation is to improve the quality of life and enhance educational and economic opportunities for all children based on the principles of respect for family, education and morality.
The programs will focus on children 6 to 10 years old and will be led by husband-wife team Mark and Julie Moran of Marble Falls. Mark currently coaches the Marble Falls Middle School tennis teams. Julie, a former collegiate competitor and a certified teacher, will assist Mark in the summer programs and then assume the reigns in the fall.
The Boys and Girls Club offers programs and services that promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence. The Boys and Girls Club of the Highland Lakes is now nearly 1,000 members strong and offers a safe place for youth to learn and grow while having fun.
"It is so important to employ a wide variety of activities to inspire and motivate such a huge variety of young personalities! Tennis is a sport that can be incorporated for the rest of their lives regardless of economic status. It will significantly improve the physical health of some children," said Deedy Atkins, Boys & Girls Club Unit Director.
John Racz, Board of Directors and Resource and Development Chairman added, "The summer tennis program fits in beautifully with our current goals and programs."
Dr. Ryder Warren, Superintendent of M.F.I.S.D., commented that "The Marble Falls School District gladly offers the middle school facilities for such a worthwhile endeavor."
To sign up for the ARF summer tennis programs contact: The Boys and Girls Club of the Highland Lakes at (830) 798-2582. Participant registration for current Boys and Girls Club members will be held May 5-9, 2008, at the Boys and Girls Club facility at 1701 Broadway Street in Marble Falls. Nonmembers will register May 12-16.
For more information concerning the fundraising campaign for the Andy Roddick Foundation International Tennis Center please contact john Arthur martinez, jam@281.com or Dave Holder, davecars@zeecon.com, (830) 598-5950.
2008 Mustang Tennis Spring Classic Coming April 26
Everyone is invited to play in the 2008 Mustang Tennis Spring Classic, Marble Falls High's annual fundraiser, to be held on Saturday, April 26th. Both Mustang team players and ordinary folks will participate in laid-back doubles and mixed doubles. If you don't have a partner, Coach Josh Boyd will find one for you.
Entry is $25 per person, which includes play, a tournament towel, and lunch (spectators may dine for $5). There will be a silent auction as well.
Silent auction items are being sought. Let Coach Boyd know (contact info below) if you have something you'd like to donate.
For more information, contact Coach Boyd at jwboyd@mfisd.txed.net, or call him at 903-521-3939.
Herrington, Bicknell Win in San Antonio
Congratulations to Nancy Herrington and her Lampasas Partner, Cheryl Bicknell, who won the women's 3.5 doubles division of the April 11-13, 2008, Gunn Lone Star Levels Tournament in San Antonio defeating San Antonio's top-seeded Melinda Gorena and Athea Livesay in the final 6-2, 6-3. On their way to the final, they defeated more San Antonio players: Mary Druck and Mary Garcia in the quarterfinals, then Nadia de la Pena and Elizabeth Ojeda in the semis.
Horseshoe Bay Mavericks Hold Shootout, Nobody Wounded
(Photos by Don Victorin)
Don Victorin did a great job planning and ramrodding the annual Spring Shootout at Horseshoe Bay Resort Tennis Center April 11 and 12, 2008. Twelve players competed in a World-Team-Tennis-like two-day rotation on three of the red clay courts. Michelle and the Tennis Center supplied donuts and some of the prizes. Entrance fees were distributed to the big winners.
Yes, I played. Don't ask.
Players supplied the vittles for a fine picnic at the Applehead Island pool, hosted by Bob Goodman (the top gun this year). Alan Schmidt was remembered in a special way.

Blount Wins Senior Games Regional
Gil Blount didn't start his weekend expecting to come out on top in the Senior Games regional competition at San Antonio's McFarlin Tennis Center on April 12 and 13, but he did. He got to the finals of the men's 70s singles without dropping a set, then won 6-4, 6-4 against a (formerly?) higher-ranked competitor, Texas #10 70s singles player Horace Ayers. The State competition is next, coming in the Fall.
Gill Blount's Gold Medal. He's wearing it. Note the rock-hard pecs.
Burnet Adult Tennis Society (BATS)
(I assume "adult" refers to age and not something more risque, but I've been wrong before.)
Ed Keyser reminds us that there's open play on Saturday mornings (9:00 AM) and Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings (5:30 PM) at the Burnet High School courts. All skill levels welcome. Bring balls & water.
HSB Resort/USTA March, 2008 Tournament/Photos

RI-CON, Official Tournament Ball Sponsor, and Carter Tannehill
The March 28-30, 2008, Horseshoe Bay Resort/USTA Red Clay Senior/SuperSenior tournament was a big success, even if local players were sometimes outplayed by those from elsewhere in the State (and a couple from outside Texas). Denise Frasier of Marble Falls, won both the women's 50s doubles (with her partner Jacqueline Davis) and the women's singles consolation. Melinda Norris (Horseshoe Bay) and Barbara Smith (Burnet) placed second to Frasier/Davis in the women's 50s doubles, and Bill Wines of Horseshoe Bay won the men's 65s consolation trophy. Some of us (speaking only for myself) felt pretty good just winning a few games.
Here are some photos of nice people.

Eagles & Aces Coming Soon -- Register Here
The annual Sneaks & Cleats tennis and golf Classic returns to Horseshoe Bay and Escondido Monday, April 21, 2008. As many of you know, this is a benefit for the Boys and Girls Club of the Highland Lakes. Tennis will be played on clay and hard courts at the Horseshoe Bay Tennis Center. Golfers will tee off at Escondido.
Entry forms are available at the HSB tennis shop, the front desk of the Boys and Girls Club in Marble Falls, or you can print one off this website simply by clicking here.
The $75 per player tennis entry fee goes entirely to the Marble Falls Boys and Girls Club of the Highland Lakes, and includes
- four thirty minute rounds of tennis
- refreshments
- a commemorative gift
- a delicious dinner at Horseshoe Bay, and, this year for the first time,
- prizes to the top four men and women players
Everyone who played last year had a fine time. This year should be great, since we're all a year older and appreciate fellowship and helping kids.
Please sign up by April 7, 2008 if you can, (for planning purposes). Feel free to call Gil Blount, Board member and volunteer extraordinaire, at (830) 596-8142 if you have any questions.

The Fix Was In
I had nothing to do with the fact that my wife, my mother, and I won three of the 16 door prizes offered by Michelle and Aland at the Spring, 2008 Tennis Banquet. I can only say that it seemed fair, since we had to sit closest to Celebrity Emcee Gil Blount as he held forth with jokes about nuns wielding bedpans (you had to be there).
The Banquet, held on Sunday, February 24, was a big success, with some 64 attendees filling tables at the Resort, sipping complimentary champagne and dining on pasta & chicken. There was an opportunity to thank Ann Wright and the Whitewater staff, and to offer a small souvenir (which won't last long) to Michelle and Aland for their hard work over the past year. There really were 16 door prizes, ranging from gift certificates, to cases of balls, to a brand new Head racquet. I hope someone will send me a few photos to post.
Women Welcome as Subs for Men's League
Women with nothing better to do on Saturday mornings than humiliate male tennis players are welcome to sign up as subs in the Men's league. We play at 8:30 most Saturdays. Please see the schedule and rules, then contact Dick Hollenbeck at the email address or phone number on the schedule.
And contact Elise Reid ASAP (by March 2 or 3) if you want to play on Wednesday evenings.
MFCTA Women's Doubles Spring Schedule Forming
Click here to email Elise Reid before February 26 to assure your place in the MFCTA Spring women's league, which begins in early March. The format and rules will be similar (but not identical) to that for the men's league (below). There will be a Queen-of-the-Universe format (not king-of-the-hill, as the men use). An introductory email was sent in mid-February, but we need more league players!
Hawkins Group Men's Schedule (Feb. - April, 2008)
MFCTA Men's Doubles League Spring 2008
The MFCTA Spring 2008 Men's Doubles Tennis League will run from March 1 to April 19, Saturdays at 8:30 a.m. at Marble Falls High School. This is an 8-week league. Information and registration materials are below; the schedule will be posted later this month.
Last year Jim Hawkins did an outstanding job of organizing the Men's League. And our many thanks go to him for that. This year the league is being organized by Dick Hollenbeck, MFCTA V.P. of Activities (big title, low pay). The organizational demand of last year's format was enough to wear a
guy out, and to reduce that (phone call and scheduling) burden and spread it around, we are changing the format a little. See the League Rules below. We have an 8 court capacity at the MF High School, for 32 men's players each Saturday. Because of interest from member-players from Burnet, it is not inconceivable that this year we will exceed 32 mens players, so priority must be given on a first-come, first-served scheduling basis. You may register as either a full participant or as a sub. Subs will not be scheduled, but may play when asked by a full participant.
Dick has set the registration deadline for midnight, Friday January 22nd, no exceptions and not a minute later (geez, he's tough). The schedule will be created Saturday, January 23rd and emailed that evening. Once Dick makes the schedule, he says he won't change it for late comers (who may be subs).
To be eligible for registration as either a full participant or a sub, your 2008 MFCTA dues must be current. You should have received a dues renewal notice from MFCTA Treasurer Jim McNabb within the last 2 weeks. Send your MFCTA dues to MFCTA, c/o Jim McNabb, PO Box 8782, Horseshoe Bay, TX 78657 (individual $15, family $30)

Expect a return email/mail acknowledgment. If you don't get an email acknowledgment from Dick, assume that he did not receive your registration and contact him.
By registering you are implicitly agreeing with the League Rules, below. Please do not register unless this is the case. Otherwise, let's play!
The schedule will be sent to you by email, so an email address is needed (or give Dick a reasonable alternative). The schedule also needs your phone number.
Required Information:
First and Last Name__________________________________ Are your 2008 MFCTA dues paid?.......... ___Y ......... ___N
Phone______________________ Second phone__________________________
Email_________________________________________________ Sub___ or Full Participant___--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Da Rules: Spring 2008 Men's Doubles
1. League participants must be current members of MFCTA (2008 dues paid).
2. A league participant is either a full participant or a sub. Only league participants categorized as full participants will be scheduled, although any MFCTA member (male or female) can act as a sub. To be a full participant, you must be league registered on or before February 22nd so that the schedule can be made on time and communicated to all league participants. Subs have an incentive to league register so their name and number is listed on the schedule.
3. On each of the 8 Saturdays, players will play 3 sets each in a king-of-the-hill series. Your first set of the day, the initial set, will be from the schedule, with 4 specified players, one of whom is phone call captain for that group of four players. Then two additional sets will be played, each with a different teammate according to the win/loss results of the immediately preceding set and the king of the hill rotation described below. The initial set is scheduled with 4 specific players so that there can be a phone call captain assigned for each initial group of four.
4. The phone call captain will call and remind all four players in his initial group of 4 that they need to show up or find a substitute who is also an MFCTA member (2008 dues paid). If fewer than 4 show up for any initial group, that group is eliminated from that day's king-of-the-hill series (and the resulting ranking points), but may play singles of Australian doubles if they wish. (If you are not the phone call captain for that week, and don't get a phone call or email in advance of Saturday, please feel free to be alarmed and take preemptive action before that Saturday and call your phone call captain or the other 3 players in order to avoid the penalty.)
5. The phone call captain will bring new balls for that Saturday's play.
6. Your partnet and opponents for the initial set are scheduled in advance. Starting courts will be claimed, not assigned, each Saturday morning at or slightly before 8:30 AM, starting at court 1, first-come, first-served basis, once the entire initial group of four is actually present and on the court.
7. Each set is an 8 game pro set with no-ad scoring. A 12-point tiebreaker (first to 7, win by two) is played if 8-8 is reached.
8. After the first set, the initial group of 4 is broken up. Winners go up one court and split (except for the winners of court 1 who stay there and split). Losers go down one court and split (except for the losers on the bottom court who stay there and split).
9. No attempt is made to include those who came with incomplete groups for that morning unless someone volunteers to sit out or has to leave early.
10. A person who is scheduled for that Saturday in an initial group of 4 may not instead be a substitute for another group unless cleared in advance with the league coordinator. This is designed to prevent folks from showing up and forming ad hoc groups of 4 on the scene Saturday morning, rather than finding subs in advance for your scheduled initial group.
Anyone having a hard copy of these rules and making sense of them on a Saturday morning may claim to be in charge (unless the league coordinator is also in such a position).
Roddick Tennis Foundation Castle Rock Update
(Press release from Dave Holder & Castle Rock)
COTTONWOOD SHORES, TX (December 14, 2007) -- The Andy Roddick Foundation (ARF), in cooperation with CastleRock Texas, The City of Cottonwood Shores, and the Marble Falls Community Tennis Association, announces plans to establish an 8.2 million dollar green and sustainable tennis facility in the Texas Hill Country. The Andy Roddick Foundation International Tennis Center will be built on land contributed by the partners of CastleRock Texas, located on Ranch Road 2147 in Cottonwood Shores, Texas.
"On behalf of the CastleRock Texas partners, Ludwig Kuttner, Robert Peerman and myself, we're over-the-top-excited to put up the land for the Andy Roddick Foundation International Tennis Center," said Marley Porter, CastleRock builder-architect. "And to think that this center will help kids for generations to come . . . that's what giving and CastleRock are all about," he added.
The ARF International Tennis Center will serve as the central training facility for the Andy Roddick Youth Tennis Program, which provides at risk youth an opportunity to learn the game of tennis and to compete on local, state and national levels. Its efforts to curtail the rising incidence of diabetes and obesity among American youth include instruction in nutrition and mentoring programs geared toward college readiness.
Top-ranked American tennis star Andy Roddick, 26, founded his foundation at the young age of 17, when he realized he was in a position to positively influence the lives of children. On October 3, 2007, his foundation implemented its youth tennis program in San Antonio in cooperation with the Rene Lacoste Foundation, The USTA Tennis and Education Fund, Our Lady of the Lake University and The Boys and Girls Club of San Antonio.
Plans for the CastleRock facility emerged from efforts by the Marble Falls Area Community Tennis Association (MFCTA) to find land for public courts. David Holder, marketing director of MFCTA, contacted local musician and tennis enthusiast, john Arthur martinez for assistance. "I asked my friend Marley Porter to do some drawings to seed the donation process. I was floored when he responded that he would not only do the initial drawings but would donate the land for the facility," Martinez explained. "The plans to create the most green and sustainable tennis facility in the world, with a proposed retractable roof over several of the courts, I knew would generate some interest."
Porter was recently recognized by Natural Home and Garden as one of the top ten green architects in America. Porter's drawings moved Sal Castillo of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) to invite Dr. Lawrence Roddick and Blanche Roddick to meet with Porter and the MFCTA. Castillo pointed out that no one has yet created a tennis facility with a retractable roof in the United States. After several meetings and phone conferences, all parties agreed to move forward with the announcement of the ARF International Tennis Facility.
"The Andy Roddick Foundation looks forward to a long and rewarding relationship with CastleRock in developing well-rounded children and tennis players," said Dr. Lawrence Roddick of the Andy Roddick Foundation. "The Foundation is committed, in principle, to establishing the tennis center at CastleRock and will work together with CastleRock to raise funds to build the tennis facility," he added.
Sal Castillo commented, "CastleRock and the Andy Roddick Foundation International Tennis Center has the USTA's full support."
Dennis Hill, Superintendent of Llano Independent School District (LISD) and Dr. Ryder Warren of Marble Falls Independent School District (MFISD) have both expressed interest in using the facility for district and invitational tournaments.
For more information on the Andy Roddick Foundation International Tennis Center at CastleRock please contact john Arthur martinez at (830) 798-9310 or David Holder at (830) 598-6697.
HSB Tennis Center Improvements Coming
Horseshoe Bay Tennis Center will be getting a significant facelift and many new amenities over the next year or so. Ground will be broken soon for four new hard courts beside the kids' courts, where the large unimproved parking area is now located. The new courts will replace the current hard courts, which will give way to a new HSB spa. The Tennis Center itself will move uphill, to the large flat area across the lagoon from the kids' courts. There will be dressing and workout facilities in the new building, and the plans call for plenty of parking.
10/13/07 Singles Ladder Posted (Click here)
New ladder players: Barry Liles is back on the challenge ladder, and has a new email address (bcliles@nctv.com, 512-619-0833). Spencer Davies joined during the summer. Another fellow may sign up within the next couple of days. Call them and PLAY A MATCH. Note: Some very good players have dropped down on the ladder because of lack of matches. One or two well-chosen matches would fix that.

Adult Ladder challenges now unlimited
Any player may challenge any other player on the ladder. That's right, I expect you (er, we) 3.0 players to call a few of the upper-echelon folks and throw down the gauntlet. Slap 'em with your gloves. Call 'em out. It's win-win for the little guy: playing a 3.5-4.5 opponent and seeing how well you hit against solid groundstrokes, or reluctantly accepting his/her refusal to play and -- not so reluctantly -- taking that place on the ladder.
Of course, comparably-ranked players can challenge each other as well. In fact, I recommend it.

Valid challenge range: No Limit!
Ranking changes take effect as soon as I receive the score (they do not wait for the new website posting). That means that players who challenge successfully may immediately challenge further up the ladder within their new challenge range (which is unlimited at present). If you aren't sure where you stand, call or email me and I'll let you know.
Do not wait to be assigned a match! Matches are arranged between players, not by the Ladder Coordinator. Players may challenge one or more levels above their name, up to the maximum posted with each ladder. The process is pretty self-explanatory; please see the RULES posted below the ladder. Scores should be sent to me within a couple of days.
Those of you who haven't played matches every few weeks, note that your rankings have started to slip. You can tell how many periods of inactivity you have by looking in the last stat column (nearest your name), headed PI. You start to drop after 3 ladder periods, then drop about 5% for each following period of no activity. If you play a match, the clock resets. Once again, note that you can challenge down to avoid inactivity. A "period" is the time between new issues of the ladder, which varies from one to three weeks depending on how busy I am or whom I want to punish (it's good to be king).
On a related topic, I initially said that players with "excused" inactivity (travel, final exams, knee surgery, visiting grandchildren) would not be demoted. I lied. Turns out the computer program won't exempt individuals in that way. So all of you who spend 2-1/2 months in Norway every summer (that would be you, Gil) should understand that you will likely drop a bit before your return.

MFCTA Board/Officers Meeting Minutes
(Sunday, January 27, 2008, 3:00 p.m. at Dick Hollenbeck's house)
The meeting was called to order by outgoing President Julie Docherty at 3:10 p.m.
Present: Board members - Greg Dyer, Julie Docherty, and Nancy Herrington. 2008 officers - (Pres.) Mark Moran, (VP of Activities) Dick Hollenbeck, (VP of Market/Advertising) Dave Holder, (Treasurer) Jim McNabb
Absent: Board member - Breck Harrison, 2008 officer - (Secretary) Bill Reid, (USTA Coordinator) Michelle Stallard
Julie gave Mark Moran the President's folder, containing information regarding the formation of our MFCTA, our by-laws and incorporation papers, our USTA membership certificate, etc. She also said she had changed the MFCTA contact information on the USTA/CTA website to reflect our new officers. Julie also reminded everyone that if any "play" is scheduled for the high school courts, someone needs to file (or get Julie to file for them) a facility use request form with the high school to avoid possible conflicts with other tennis activities.
Nancy told everyone how to get into the MFCTA e-mail account at nctv.com. She also gave Jim McNabb a copy of the minutes from the annual January meeting in which he is authorized to have his name added to the bank signature card at American Bank. She also requested that he have the bank start sending the bank statements to him. Jim said he would take care of this.
In answer to Bill Reid's question about the area our CTA includes, Nancy said it is registered with USTA as covering Marble Falls, Horseshoe Bay, Llano, Kingsland, Granite Shoals, Spicewood, and Burnet. Dave Holder mentioned that some of the Burnet tennis association people had talked about joining our CTA. Mike Slizel from Burnet is also an MFCTA member, and Mark Moran or Dick Hollenbeck or Jim McNabb (someone who plays with the men's group) might talk with Mike for further information. Also, Mark said he would contact the Burnet coach to see if he knows any more about it.
Dave Holder reminded us that if someone wants something in the newspapers, we need to tell him. He also reviewed the latest goings-on at Castlerock. The USTA is involved as is the Andy Roddick Foundation; however, neither group has committed to a certain amount of money they're willing to put up towards helping the Castlerock courts get built. Further discussion involved the high school courts being "gone" as of May 1 and the safety factor of the courts at the Middle School.
That led to a discussion of events the MFCTA might sponsor. Mark Moran mentioned a men's league, a women's league - Dick asked about a mixed league. Mark also mentioned talking again to the Marble Falls Parks and Recreation committee about town tennis courts. We discussed a Relay for Life event. Due to construction, Relay will hold their walk at the Middle School track on June 6-7, but with the high school courts not available and the MS courts not being safe, if we did anything, it would have to be done at Horseshoe Bay. Mark also mentioned other ideas -- a double swing tournament (a golfer playing with a tennis player and vice versa), a silent auction BBQ (with auction items being donated from the community), a city- or county-wide championship, and an MFCTA scholarship.
Before making decisions about new leagues, it was decided that the cost of dues will remain the same ($15.00 individual; $30.00 family) and that dues will be on an annual basis, ending Dec. 31. Beginning next January, dues renewal will happen on or before the annual January business meeting (with an e-mail notice being sent to members in December when reminding them of the annual meeting). Since that can't happen this year, members must renew their dues prior to participating in any of the new events, i.e., prior to March 1st. Jim McNabb will send out an e-mail to all MFCTA members telling them this.
Decisions made about leagues were then finalized. Dates were set based on the use of the high school courts and not conflicting with the high school tennis team plans.
Men's league - Saturdays at 9:00a.m. - will run from March 1-April 19
In his e-mail, Bill Reid had indicated that Jim Hawkins has said he would help organize another one. Dick will check with Jim. Discussion as to the format of the new league led to the following decision --- four weeks of random pairings with king-of-the-hill format (3 no-ad sets) and keep track of individual scores as well as which courts players finished on; then, based on the prior 4 weeks' results, in last 4 weeks, divide into two "ability" levels
Ladies' league - Wednesday nights at 6:00 p.m. - run March 5-April 23
In his e-mail, Bill Reid had also indicated that his wife, Elise, would help organize a women's league. The same format the men will use (king-of-the-hill, 4 weeks and 4 weeks) will also be used for the women; however, women will play only two 8-game pro sets a night. Mark Moran will contact Elise (as will Dick Hollenbeck if Jim Hawkins doesn't need him to help with the men's league).
There was discussion about setting another meeting, but it was decided that was not needed at this time. Any “business” could be done via e-mails. There being no further business to attend to, Dave Holder moved we adjourn; Mark Moran seconded, and all voted to adjourn at 5:30 p.m.
ACTION ITEMS:
Mark -- contact Burnet tennis player/coach re: Burnet's association; contact Elise Reid re: women's league; follow up on possibility of using HSB courts for some sort of charity fundraiser event.
Dick -- contact Jim Hawkins re: men's league and maybe Elise Reid re: women's league.
Jim -- go to American Bank and switch name/address/etc.; send e-mail to all MFCTA members re: dues renewal deadline.
-- Minutes by Nancy Herrington (with our thanks), due to Bill Reid's absence.

Play format will be best 2 out of 3 sets, no-ad scoring, with a 7-point Coman tiebreak (see rules below) played at 6-all in any set. A 10-point super tiebreak (match Coman, see rules below) may be played in place of a 3 rd set if all four participants agree to that before the match starts. The player whose number has an * by it will be responsible for bringing a can of tennis balls for that court’s match … and everyone needs to bring her own water. If you are unable to play on an assigned night, it will be up to you to get a substitute (must be a MFCTA member) – either one of the players who has a “bye” that night or one of the subs shown at the bottom. (And if you just can’t find a sub and need to default your match, please call the other 3 players in your match so they will know not to show up.) In the event of bad weather on a Wednesday night, those matches simply will be cancelled. (Since we have only 5 weeks to play before construction starts at the high school, we can’t postpone them.)
Coman Tiebreak
At 6-all in a set: First to seven points, win by two.
The first server serves one point from the deuce court. Immediately change ends of the court and the second server serves two points, one from the ad court, followed by one from the deuce court. The next server serves two points - ad court followed by deuce court. Change ends of the court after these four points are played and every four points thereafter until one player or doubles team reaches seven points and wins by two. Match Coman Tiebreak (used in place of a third set) uses the same format as above but play is to ten points, win by two.
Men's League Schedule (inactive at this time).

A "challenge ladder" is a mechanism for encouraging play and ranking players according to their skill levels. As members of the ladder play each other, their relative positions are adjusted to reflect the results. The purpose is to allow all players, from beginner to advanced, to meet and play other people at their own skill levels. Whether you play only occasionally, just for fun, or want to compete several times a week, you can meet others at your level. You will also have the opportunity to improve your play by challenging others who are a bit more advanced. The ladder is also a good source of ordinary match players. Matches are not considered "challenges" unless designated by the challenger and accepted as such by the person challenged.
A new player on the ladder may find that the first one or two matches played appear to be mismatches (in terms of skill level). Don't be discouraged; the ladder sorts itself into order. You will soon discover other players with whom you can play comfortably. In addition to the relative rankings, you may find it useful to look at the results of specific matches. This can give you a further clue to the levels of other players, and gives some indication of players that you may want to challenge.
Don't just sit there, make the call! The other players are eager to play. Regardless of your frequency or level of play, there are matches waiting.
Operation of the ladder
Every week or two, you will receive an updated list of the players on the ladder, and/or it will be posted on a subpage of my website (www.reidpsychiatry.com/tennis.html). The list will show the current ranking of players (as calculated by the software algorhythm) and the results of recent matches.
The following describes the rules that apply to our challenge ladder play. The primary purpose behind the rules is to allow the ladder to operate properly, contributing to the enjoyment of all players (and the sanity of the Ladder Coordinator). The most important rule is that common sense and sportsmanlike courtesy should be applied in every situation. the second most important rule is #17.
Challenge Ladder Rules
1. The "season" for our purposes is year-around. Extended cold/wet weather may be reason for delaying matches. The Ladder Coordinator may designate a shorter season or an "end of year" date for ranking or award purposes.
2. Initial ranking is informally-based. New players are usually added at the bottom.
3. A player may challenge any player above his position who is within the legal challenge range. For now, the legal range will contain about 30% of the ladder members; the precise number appears on each copy of the ladder listing that you receive. Invalid challenges are not accepted for ladder adjustment. The challenger is responsible for verifying the validity of the challenge.
4. Top players and infrequently challenged players should consider challenging players below them within the legal range in order to play enough matches to keep their ranking current (see “inactivity” rules 14 & 15). Of course, the lower-ranked player incurs no risk in such challenges.
5. Players are not required to accept more than one challenge per week (although they may do so). Otherwise, players must accept valid challenges from other members, or accept a loss by default. Players are not required to accept a challenge from another player they have defeated within the past three weeks (although they may do so if they wish).
6. An "unaccepted" challenge is a valid challenge for which the challenged player does not agree to play within 10 days (see below). An "unanswered" challenge is one in which the challenger cannot reach the challenged player after several reasonable tries. Although common sense and courtesy should resolve most such situations, a challenger may report either an unaccepted or an unanswered challenge to the Ladder Coordinator after the challenge period has expired, and a win may be awarded to the challenger (see below). Such wins will be 6-0, 6-0 but will be noted as defaults.
7. Players may issue or accept more than one challenge at a time. A ladder match is only valid, however, if the players are within legal challenge range at the time of the match. Abuse of multiple challenges, for example creating inconvenience by frequently cancelling, may lead to changes in this rule. Of course, members are free to play matches that are not “valid,” which will be ignored for ladder purposes. Except for avoiding demotions for inactivity, players get no "extra points" for frequent challenges. Rank is based on wins and maintaining a minimum activity level, not number of matches.
8. The challenged player selects the time and location of the match; however, the time and location should be mutually agreeable to both players. Court fees, if any, should generally be shared, and must be agreeable to both players.
9. The challenged player specifies the court surface (hard, clay, grass, synthetic grass, or indoor), provided that surface is reasonably available to both players. The challenger’s preference, convenience, or knees may be taken into account if the challenged player wishes to extend that courtesy.
10. A match should be completed within ten days of the challenge, unless extenuating circumstances prevent it. A player who cancels a match without adequate notice (including a challenger who withdraws his/her challenge) may be treated as a loss for the challenger, depending on circumstances and agreement or disagreement between players. If one player simply does not appear for a match, or cancels at the last minute, the other player is encouraged to report a default and the score is recorded as 6-0, 6-0.
11. The challenger will provide new, USTA-approved tennis balls, for the match.
12. The standard rules of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) apply to ladder matches. Usual scoring is best two of three sets, with a six-point tie-break at the end of any set that reaches 6-all. Any other mutually-agreed-upon method of scoring may be used if both players agree.
13. The winner of the match should report the results to the Ladder Coordinator within 48 hours, providing the date of the match, winner’s name, loser’s name, match score, location, and surface type.
14. Injury or excused inactivity. Players may notify the Ladder Coordinator of vacations, injuries, or other forced inactivity and request an inactivity notice. Players who have a reasonable excuse may avoid challenge for 4 posting periods (the periods between ladder postings, usually 1-2 weeks each), but may be passively demoted based on the results of other matches. The player may eventually have his or her rank reduced by the computer algorhythm. After that, the algorhythm automatically demotes players who show no match activity 5% per posting period. This is
