HSB Red Clay Levels Tourney a Huge Success

HSB's first-ever USTA sanctioned tournament, one of the few red clay events in the state, drew over 130 registrants February 16-18, 2008. Rain and cold knocked out one day, but players and observers had a great third day as the competitors played an abbreviated format of singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. The Sunday weather was perfect for play, watching, and relaxing on the Marriott green.

Michelle Stallard and Aland Price did a great job of managing the tournament, scheduling, and keeping things moving. Players came from around the state, with large groups from Austin, Lubbock, and other cities. Aland's father, an experienced USTA referee, was the tournament umpire, and his brother, also a teaching professional played in the open division.

For tournament results, click here.

Click HERE (Don't really click: link deactivated) to register for the NEXT HSB/USTA-sanctioned clay court tournament, March 28-30 (register by March 16). This will be age-stratified, not an NTRP levels tourney.

Roddick - Castle Rock Tennis Center Planned for Cottonwood Shores

On December 7, 2007, Marley Porter, designer and developer of the new Castle Rock complex on Highway 2147 in Cottonwood Shores, announced that the Andy Roddick Foundation has committed to building an international tennis center on property that will be transferred from Castle Rock to the Foundation. Porter told a group of attendees at his monthly Friday evening gatherings that Andy's mother had met with them at Castle Rock the day before and encouraged the public announcement.

The tennis center will be a public facility, but will apparently include private memberships of some kind. Rumors of many courts, opportunities for area league play, etc., have been circulating for some time but, well, . . . rumors are rumors. ?Quien sabe? Final letters of intent have not yet been completed, but Porter expects the land to be transferred in January and construction to start very soon after that.

If you haven't visited the nascent Castle Rock complex yet, it's worth a trip. The plans are ambitious, ranging from living space and hotels to spa, art, Alzheimer's care and assisted living, performance venues, john Arthur's state-of-the-art recording studio, and more, all relatively self-supporting from a "green" standpoint. Architect Porter is no stranger to large, innovative projects, having designed and built award-winning facilities and homes all over the country (including the One World Theatre in Austin).

Hawkins Group Men's Schedule (January-February, 2008)

MFCTA Meeting & Play January 12, 2008

From the MFCTA Board of Directors (Julie, Breck, Nancy, and Greg) and MFCTA Officers (Julie, Dave, Barbara, Mojo, and Greg):

Mark your calendars for Saturday, January 12, 2008, 8:30 AM, at the MF high school tennis courts for our annual MFCTA business meeting. We will be electing new officers. After the meeting, we'll have a short doubles playday . . . no t-shirts or food supplied, just some tennis fun, assuming reasonable weather. (We'll have the meeting regardless of the weather.)

And please, if you're willing to serve as an officer, send your name ahead of time to Nancy Herrington at nmherrington@academicplanet.com. (If you don't show up, you could be elected "in absentia.")

Kournikova Visit Photos, November, 2007

Thanks to Sallye Johnson for sending these photos of Kournikova, Michelle, Aland, Gil-the-Umpire, and lots and lots of happy kids.

Hawkins Group Men's Schedule (Dec., 2007)

Anna Kournikova at HSB Tennis Center Sat., November 3

On Saturday, November 3rd, everyone is invited to welcome Anna Kournikova to Horseshoe Bay Resort. She will be here to show her support of our efforts to "grow the game" through our new Andy Roddick Kids' Courts. There will be a brief ceremony at 10AM at the Kids' Courts, followed by a kids clinic and a doubles match between Anna and Michelle and some of the kids from the juniors program. In addition to Anna, country music artist, Kyle Park will perform a free concert before and after the tennis. Texas Governor Rick Perry will make Anna an "Honorary Texan" in recognition of all the great charities that she supports. Michael Thomas will honor her with a special presentation from Horseshoe Bay, as well.

Michelle reminds us that Anna is a beautiful champion who won two grand slam doubles titles, was ranked #1 in the world in doubles and #8 in the world in singles. She has also been featured on the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, and consistently named as People Magazine's sexiest athlete. Michelle has watched Anna's commitment to growing our game and support of numerous charities. Last year she was honored by the Boys and Girls Clubs of America for her support and promotion of a healthy and active life style. She was the first player to volunteer to support the Bush-Clinton Serving for Tsunami Relief event at the Toyota Center in Houston in 1995.

Anna is rarely given credit for being one of the great players of our generation. She was one of only three players to beat Steffi Graf on grass in the 1990s. She also reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon. It takes more than good looks to achieve such world class results.

Come and join everyone to give Anna a big Horseshoe Bay welcome.

Francis, Blount, Hawkins Succeed at Super Senior Sectional

Three MFCTA members brought home hardware (and ranking points) from the 2007 Lakeway World of Tennis Super Senior Sectional tournament October 18-21. (It's hard to think of oneself as a "super senior," but in tennis that appelation comes at a very young age.)

Peggy Francis (Delaware Springs) and Gil Blount (Oak Ridge) won the Century + 30 mixed doubles, defeating top-seeds Kugler & Kugler 6-4, 6-2 in the finals. They had defeated second-seeded Noble & Rodriguez 6-0, 6-1 in the semis.

Gil and long-time partner Jim Hawkins (Horseshoe Bay) survived two three-set matches to win the Men's 65 doubles consolation, defeating Brecht & Denton 4-6, 7-6, 6-3. Priot to that, they had beaten Brown & Smith 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Peggy and partner Joan Kingsley (San Antonio) also played in the Women's 70 doubles, winning a match against Lyckman & Nichols (6-0, 6-2) in the round-robin.

Dyer & Gold Win a Big One, No. 1 in Texas 4.5s

Greg Dyer (left) and Greg Gold with 1st place hardware. (Photo by Jo Lynn Dyer)

Top-seeds Greg Dyer (Meadowlakes) and Greg Gold of Austin won the NTRP 4.5 Doubles at the recent Texas Sectional tournament in San Antonio. The won a series of tough matches against other ranked players before defeating former Bolletieri Academy coach Charlie Rivera and former Baylor coach David Luedeke (both of Waco) 7-6, 6-0 in the finals. The competition in the final match was fierce, and slightly marred by a couple of umpire sportsmanship calls against Rivera (one allegedly involving a clash between a racquet and a netpost; the racquet was fatally wounded).

The 600 ranking points they won in the sectional bolster Dyer's and Gold's number one rank in Texas 4.5 doubles (by a substantial margin). They were tied for number one prior to the tournament. USTA Sectional tournaments are larger and more competitive than local ones, offering far more ranking points to attract the state's best players.

Jo Lynn Dyer and Jennifer Harrison of Meadowlakes also played in the sectional, making it to the round of 16 in the women's 3.5 doubles before losing two tie-break sets to 5th-seed Martha Moon and Andrea Zomer of Corpus Christi.

HSB Tennis Center Court Improvements

For those who haven't noticed, in addition to the 3 great Andy Roddick Kids' Courts and bleachers (which were featured in the October issue of Tennis Life, p. 40), we have a fine new ball machine, new windscreens, cold water on every court, and brand new awnings for shade between the courts. Definitely worth the price of admission.

HSB U.S. Open Social

Horseshoe Bay players and friends enjoyed a few hours of cutthroat competition before settling down to drinks and snacks and watching the men's final of the U.S. Open on September 10. Michelle and Aland guided play on hard and clay courts. Aland gracefully lost his serve in one of the matches. All in all, it was a charicature of doubles play at the Open, with booze. (Photos courtesy of Gil Blount.)

Jim learns the importance of poise & posture.

Grace under pressure.

You gonna eat that?

No sarcasm, just nice folks.

Roddick Dedicates HSB Children's Courts

On July 19, Andy Roddick came to Horseshoe Bay to dedicate the Andy Roddick USTA Kids' Courts at Horseshoe Bay Tennis Center. There was a great turnout of HSB folks, area tennis players, USTA and USTA Texas officials, and Horseshoe Bay Resort dignitaries to fill the bleachers and watch Roddick and HSB pro Aland Price work with the first "official" group of youngsters. Michelle Stallard got compliments all around for her innovation and hard work toward making these courts a reality. The USTA voiced its appreciation to her and to Horseshoe Bay for donating the land. Austin television stations took lots of video, including some of Ashley Stallard holding her own as she rallied with Andy on the shortened courts (she holds her own on full-sized courts as well).

HSB Memorial Tennis Tourney and Dick Reitz Barbecue October 13

Every year, Horseshoe Bay and the Dick Reitz family host a day of tennis and a very nice barbecue in memory of Dick and others who have passed to that Centre Court beyond the clouds. We'll gather at 8AM for donuts and coffee and to meet our team captains. Play will be from about 9AM until noon. Sign up by calling the HSB Tennis Center (598-2591). Winners will be announced at the Dick Reitz Memorial Dinner and casino party that evening (October 13) at Quail Point.

Those who have attended both events in the past know that this is a great day of fun and remembrance with the Reitz family and others. You need not have ever met Dick to enjoy the evening!

Peggy Francis, Local Player, Nationally Ranked

Peggy Francis of Delaware Springs, near Burnet, has been playing national tournaments since she was 15, when she first graced the National Grass Court Championships in Germantown, PA. She'll return to that venue to play in the women's 75s singles next year. She has fond memories of the Pennsylvania houses and landscape, which were unusual for "a girl from El Paso."

Peggy started playing in the sixth grade, recalls being on the high school team in El Paso, and was tennis coach at Eastwood High. She was always ranked number 1 or number 2 for her age in the Southwest. She and her partner, San Antonio’s Joan Kingsley, have been ranked as high as number 2 in the U.S. in Women's 70s doubles, and are currently number one in Texas 70s.

Peggy and Joan regularly play in the national championships on all four surfaces (hard, clay, grass, and indoor); Peggy has done it since 1988. Their most recent was the May, 2007, hard court nationals in La Jolla, CA.

International Friendship Cup

In November, 2006, Peggy and Laura Leach, of Boston, were invited to Japan to represent the U.S. in the Friendship Cup. The pair finished second in an outstanding field of 70s women, finally losing to the Japanese team. Only one other U.S. team, the 80s women, placed higher. Peggy's husband Jim was there to watch her play.

The Friendship Cup was endowed by Mr. Suzuki, who left funds to support the international series when he passed away at age 99. Teams came from many different countries, including Japan, the U.S., Canada, Australia, and Taiwan. The age-group format covers ten years rather than five, from 50s to 80s, for both men and women. Unfortunately, the Suzuki funds have dwindled with time; 2006 will be its final year.

An Approachable Champ

The final good news is that Peggy is a staple in Highland Lakes area tennis, playing several times a week with the "A" ladies (who occasionally let men fill in as subs). She's one of the nicest players around, but don't expect her to go easy on you just because you're male.

HSB Clinics with Michelle Stallard

Michelle, an experienced teacher, coach, and all-around nice person, regularly offers clinics for both juniors and adults. They are open to both members and nonmembers, for various fees. If you have any doubts, read about her successes in the Juniors Section. Click here for the Summer, 2007 Juniors program or call the HSB Tennis Center (830-598-2591) for more information.

HSB Cocktail Mixed Doubles September 28

The next cocktail mixed doubles night is Friday, September 28 at the Tennis Center (dinner members $8, guests $10) from 4:30 to 6:30, with cocktails afterward at the Tall Texan.

Finally, an unpretentious place to drink while sweating.

Bring a can of balls (for the tennis, not the drinking). Sign up by 10 AM Friday September 28.

MFCTA Men Laughed at Odds, Planned Drubbing for Lakeway

The Hawkins-led MFCTA men's league fully expected to defeat eight of Lakeway World of Tennis's best doubles teams on Saturday, May 12. When the dust settled, Greg & Chuck, Jeff & Bill, Scott & Dick had won their matches and the victory party was held in good spirits. A very good showing for our first inter-club match, and one against a much larger group of players!

Jim's lineup was

#1 Greg Dyer and Chuck Michie (W)

#2 Jeff Leedy and Bill Wines (W)

#3 Jim McNabb and Mark Crouse

#4 Gil Blount and J.C.Williams

#5 Jim Hawkins and Donald Farmer

#6 Scott Kilpatrick and Dick Hollenbeck (W)

#7 Keith Bedard and Bruce Anderson

#8 Dave Kithil and Bill Dickey

Don Farmer has been activated from the Galveston farm club. Jim says Don has been on standby, and although not fully recovered from his last birthday party, has agreed to give the team the benefit of his infinite wisdom and skill on the courts.

Dyers, Harrison, Francis Lead Area Adults in Texas Tournaments

Georgetown Tennis Center, GTC Summer Slam 2007

Jennifer Harrison, Jo Lyn Dyer

Area players did very well at three tournaments on the weekend of May 4-6, 2007. I had my camera at the Georgetown Summer Slam, where Jo Lyn and Jennifer won the women's 3.5 doubles. I tried to take a photo of myself as well, but I couldn't get in front of the camera fast enough after I pressed the shutter button.

Waco Super Senior Sectional. Peggy Francis of Burnet (Delaware Springs) and her partner Joan Kingsley of San Antonio, placed second in the 65s doubles. Next week, Peggy and Joan head for La Jolla, California, for the 70s doubles of the National Hard Surface championships.  Bill Wines, Horseshoe Bay, made the semifinals of the 65s singles consolation.

Buccaneer Days Adult Major Zone, Corpus Christi. Top seeds Greg Dyer (Meadowlakes) and Austin's Greg Gold won the 4.5 doubles without dropping a set.

Georgetown Summer Slam. Top seeds Jo Lyn Dyer and Jennifer Harrison, Meadowlakes, won the 3.5 doubles. Laura Servise of Llano placed second in the women's open round robin. Bill Reid, Horseshoe Bay, won the 3.0 singles consolation.

Please let me know where YOU are playing and, later (if you don't mind), how you did. Photos would be a real plus, even if they're of someone else (but Elise and I are the only ones who have unfettered rights to post granddaughter pictures).

Horseshoe Bay Juniors Development Programs

Michelle Stallard's highly successful juniors programs have a special place in Horseshoe Bay tennis. She and Aland Price have created a wide array of clinics, private lesson opportunities, conditioning programs, leagues, team support, and elite training for junior players of all ages and levels. For all the information, schedules, and application materials, call (830) 598-2591 or email mstallard@hsbresort.com.

HSB Kids Courts Completed

The USTA-sponsored children's courts planned for the HSB Tennis Center have become a reality. As of mid-June, Dobbs Tennis Courts of Austin was completing the surfacing and some mysterious metal framing for structures had appeared. In late June everything was finished and the courts were in use. Michelle told me not to spread it around, but she and husband Tim (who is mentioned in a recent television special on Jim Courier's InsideOut and Courier's Kids special) are working to bring a major star to Horseshoe Bay for the dedication. DO NOT TELL MICHELLE THAT I TOLD YOU.

MFCTA Men Have Rematch with Lakeway at HSB

The MFCTA men played valiantly, but only one of our seven teams managed to win in the rematch with Lakeway Saturday, June 23 at the Horseshoe Bay Tennis Center. Greg Dyer and Mark Moran, playing in the number one slot, won in three sets. Some of the other matches were close, and others not so close (don't ask). The matches were played on both hard courts and HSB's famous red clay, a treat for the Lakeway men (who didn't have the grace to lose a couple). Guido, the CPR-trained gorilla, was not needed after all.

The MFCTA lineup: #1 Greg Dyer & Mark Moran, #2 Larry Brumfield & Bill Wines, #3 Jim Cornelius & J.C. Williams, #4 Jim McNabb & Mike Atkinson, #5 Scott Kilpatrick & Dick Hollenbeckm #6 Keith Bedard & Bruce Anderson, #7 Bill Reid & Jim Hawkins.

Mixed-Up Tennis Results

The June 8, 2007, Mixed Up Doubles benefit tournament was a great success. In spite of a very reasonable entry fee, and thanks to great volunteers and participation, the tournament donated $400 to the Relay for Life and MFCTA made $250.

The winners had to fight their way through a field of 19 mixed doubles teams from all over the Highland Lakes area, including Marble Falls, Burnet, Llano, Kingsland, and Horseshoe Bay. Nancy Herrington and Greg Dyer took first place after a hard late-night final match against second-place winners Laura Servise and Adam Hassel. Becky Cunningham and Mark Moran won the consolation division.

MFCTA Men Play Wimberley & San Marcos

I'm not sure how we did in the end, but Jim H. was frantically writing down winning scores. Bruce's and mine weren't among them.

The Wimberley folks extended fine hospitality, including a great barbecue spread and restrooms only half a mile away. Lots of MFCTA spouses and kids came as well. The artsy photos were taken by Gil, Elise, and me. I started to label them with names and funny titles, but it got out of hand. Make some up (no prizes).

If you didn't make the cut, it's probably because you were blurry, or a victim of shrinking bandwidth. If anyone has additional photos, email them to me and I'll try to post some of them (I get to decide which ones).

Price Arrives at HSB Tennis Center

Aland Price is the new head tennis professional at the Horseshoe Bay Tennis Center, complementing Director of Tennis Michelle Stallard. Aland is a former All-American singles and doubles player for Abilene Christian University, and comes to us from Birchwood Tennis and Fitness Club in Abilene (where he was Director of Tennis). You should also know that he has a great reputation as a teacher of adults and juniors, is very pleasant and good looking (just like all those California pros in the movies), and has a pony tail. That won't be hard to spot on the Horseshoe Bay courts.

Bruce Anderson Mystery Samaritan

What HSB men's "B" player was seen volunteering hours of his time, and risking cardiac arrest and mud poisoning, to help repair flood damage at Ann Wright's home? Good on ya, B . . . oops, almost gave it away.

MFCTA Men's League Underway

(See photo at top of page.) It was cooler than usual, but a dry, calm day on Saturday, March 17, 2007, when the new MFCTA 3.0+ men's league started official play at the MFHS courts. Largely organized by Jim Hawkins under USTA aegis, 24 men signed up and 16 were present for the inaugural matches. Jim introduced Julie Stice Docherty, MFCTA President and announced a couple of birthdays. The pre-match fellowship, gently encouraged by Jim's coaching whistle, should be a part of the next 24 weeks of play, in which each member will get to play with and against every other in a friendly king-of-the-hill format.

HSB Tourney Big Success

By the time many of you read this, you'll know that the Horseshoe Bay Tennis Center pre-banquet doubles tournament was a phenomenal success. The courts were filled on Saturday, February 17, with at least 46 A men & women, B women, and Mavericks.

Doubles teams from HSB and the surrounding area, some as far away as San Antonio, played up to seven one-set matches in a round robin format. Members had a chance to play some nonmember friends and strangers in the mix, and the competition was fierce. The tournament was very well organized and staffed (no surprise). The big turnout extended play beyond the predicted hour; no one complained. There were hors d'oeurves and margaritas after play. I was too busy playing to take many photos, or to get details of the other sections, but everyone I saw was smiling through his or her sweat (sorry ladies, I meant "dew").

I was allowed to join the A men for a change, and played with Larry Brumfield. With his serve, his forehand, his backhand, and his speed at the net, we made a great team. How else could I ever say I won a few service games against the likes of Gil, Jim, john Arthur, Scott, and Gerry?

MFCTA Kickoff Successful

The Marble Falls Community Tennis Association (MFCTA) had a fine kickoff event on January 27. Over 40 adults and kids attended and got prestigious MFCTA t-shirts. Most played mixed doubles in a morning "king of the hill" tournament. Sal Castillo, USTA Texas Section Service Representative, set up a mini-court for the youngest, inexperienced kids, who played mini-tennis with Nerf balls (see article above on kids' courts coming to Horseshoe Bay Tennis Center). Lunch was served, and there were drawings for door prizes provided by the USTA.

Many thanks go out to business sponsors Edwards Risk Management, Inc. (prevention is better than cure), Central Texas Glass (you break it, you bought it), Consultants Advertising Retail Sales (not sure what they do, but it's appreciated), Pottery Ranch, (how many pots does it take to qualify for an agricultural exemption?), Charlie's Tennis Services (now, who could that be?), Moe's Restaurant (great pizza), and Jim's Electric (highest voltages in the area).

Here's what Pat Dickey said about the MFCTA event:

The (MFCTA) tennis tournament was great. I think there were about 40 people there. The courts were full. We had ages from old ones, me, to Luke. The tennis was great and some outstanding players were there. Some of our A ladies were there along with a couple of the A men.

We played a rotation of four games, then the losers moved over to the next court and the winners stayed and switched partners so we got to meet, greet and had a REALLY good time.

We had a lunch and barbequed hamburgers that were cooked on a grill they brought over. We had drinks chips and in the morning orange juice and donuts.

They really did a bang up job, we met a lot of good fun tennis players and everyone was extremely nice, polite and encouraging for the players like me who were not so good. The level of all the players were very very high with open players, 5.0 players, and some really good outstanding players, and there was some GREAT competetion for the good players but the format was conducive to all players. Good job and we are all looking forward to the next event.

If that's not reason enough to join (mfcta@nctv.com), there will be another event in the Spring.

Ashley Stallard Makes 12s Superchamps!

(Information from Sallye Johnson)

Our Horseshoe Bay/Highland Lakes juniors continue to distinguish themselves, led this time by Ashley Stallard. (O.K., Ashley lives in Lakeway, but she's at Faith Academy and will be playing for them in the Spring.) Ashley won the Austin Juniors Major Zone Championship December 2, an huge tournament with a total of 665 players, catapulting her into the elite Superchamp division. She's the first Superchamp from our area in many years. She didn't lose a single set on her way to victory in the final.

Luke Lawson Champs Up

(Information from Sallye Johnson)

Luke Lawson, a man with a tennis mission, won the ZAT in San Angelo earlier in November to qualify for the 12s Champs at nine years of age! Luke not only "champed up," he also won the tournament, giving him twice the required points. He defeated Rahil Patel of Abilene 6-0, 6-0 and went on to defeat Mac McCullough of Dallas 6-2, 6-1. Midland's Tyler Gilland, the #3 seeded player, gave Luke his toughest competition, but Luke won 7-5, 4-6, 10-6 to qualify for the finals where he defeated William Flanagan, the #2 seed, from Abilene 6-3, 6-2.

More Juniors Success

(Information from Sallye Johnson)

Aland Price, head tennis professional at Horseshoe Bay Resort, predicted that area juniors would do well in November ZATs in San Angelo and Pasadena. He was right.

Hannah Still was a finalist in the girls 16 division. Hannah was the come-from-behind player for the entire tournament. In the round of 32 she defeated Megan Bond of North Richland Hills 7-6, 6-0. She went on to beat #3 seeded Morgan Ware of Corpus Christi 6-4, 6-1, fighting back from 0-4 to win six games in a row in the first set. In the quarterfinals, she lost her first set against Madison Murray 6-7 but won the second 6-0, then won a super tiebreak after being down 0-6. Hannah defeated Sidney Tucker from Westlake High in the semi-finals 4-6, 6-2, 13-11, but was finally stopped by Meredith Byrne of Lubbock in the championship 6-3, 6-2. Hannah will have 48 points for the December tournament and should find herself in a seeded position.

Ryan Johnson of Horseshoe Bay was a quarterfinalist in the boys 16 division. Ryan got off to a strong start defeating Bradford Simpson of Abilene 6-0, 6-0. He went on to defeat the #2 seeded Robert Gates of Midland 6-2, 6-2. San Angelo's Micah Rochin, seeded #5, prevailed over Ryan in the quarterfinals, and went on to win the tournament.

Others competing included Michael Holder, who lost his first round match to #4 seed Drake Turnbull of Dallas 7-5, 6-2; won his first consolation round match against San Angelo's Brandt Bates 6-2, 6-0; then lost to Wilks Kothmann, Lubbock, 6-3, 7-5. Savannah Still won her first match against Erin Simons of San Angelo 7-5, 6-1 but lost to #2 seed Megan Crocker (Abilene) 7-6, 6-2. Ashley Ford defeated Anna Schneemann of San Angelo 7-5, 6-3, but lost her second match to Madison Hathorn, Abilene, 6-4, 6-2. Nicole Johnson lost her opening round to Katherine Lemsters of Abilene.

Cade Rice, competing in the boys 18s, found his first round tough and lost 6-0, 5-7, 10-8 to the eventual tournament winner, Kelly Dunson (Midland).

In the Pasadena Championship Junior Major Zone tournament, #5 seeded Ashley Stallard made it to the finals. Ashley defeated Jireh Groenow of Magnolia, Texas 6-2, 6-0 in her first round, then went on to easily defeat #3 seed Samantha Martino (Katy) 6-2, 6-1. In the semifinals, she defeated #2 seed Chloe Patterson to qualify for the finals, where she lost 6-2, 6-3 to Maria Smith. Maria was unseeded in this tournament, her second win in a row. Director of Tennis Michelle Stallard predicted that Maria will be nationally ranked within a year.

Lana Thomas, competing in her second champ tournament, played very well but found the competition tough. She lost her opening round to Kristina Gabrielsen of Houston 7-5, 6-0 and was then defeated by #4 seeded Jessica Phelps of Beaumont 7-6, 6-3.

Our junior players are competing with the best players in Texas. They're currently back on the practice courts in preparation for the December ZAT, champ and super champ tournaments.

Middle School Mustangs Win in Wimberly

(Info & photos from Julie Docherty)

The Marble Falls Middle School Mustangs played an outstanding tournament in Wimberly April 28-29, 2007, collecting individual first- and second-place and consolation trophies in both singles and doubles, and taking first place among the 8th grade teams.

In the 8th grade division, Connor Docherty won the boys singles; Kyleigh Ann Futrell and Afton Heinatz took first in the girls doubles, and Kelley Dowell and Kristin Cunningham backed them up with second place. Eric Vaubel and Tanner Roland won the boys doubles consolation. Colin Smith placed second in the 7th grade boys singles.

Marble Falls schools continue to intimidate their Juniors competition. Seems to me that's the natural order of things in Texas.

Faith Academy Girls win State!

Girls Clean Up, Boys Hold Their Own

(From Sallye Johnson)

The Marble Falls Faith Academy Girls Tennis Team, coached by Michelle Stallard, squeaked by Brownsville Livingway to win the 2007 Texas Division 2A tennis championship of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS). The final tournament was held in Waco April 20-21. Edd Burleson, TAPPS president, presented the championship plaque and medals to the Team (see photos below).

The Faith Academy Flames finished with 19 team points. Brownsville Livingway was a close second with 18.5 points. Tyler East Texas and Longview Trinity came next with 14.5 and 10.5, respectively.

Kristin Bohannon and Caitlin Schnorrenberg contributed greatly to the team score by finishing 2nd in girls doubles, as did Lana Thomas, who placed 3rd in girls singles. Other points were added by Hannah Still, who won her opening match but lost to the eventual champion, Melanie Fortenberry, and Deana Hoover.

The Flames boys team played only three competitors but managed to tie for 7th place with 7 points. Ryan Johnson (singles) and Chase Penner and Clayton Bridges (doubles) made the quarterfinals. In the end, Dallas Fairhill won the boys division, followed by Dallas-Arlington St. Albans, Kerrville Our Lady of the Hills, and Frisco Legacy. (Note the pattern of much larger schools, which makes both the boys' and girls' achievements even more impressive.)

The Division 2A matches were played on the Baylor University Streich courts. Ed Price, father of new Horseshoe Bay head pro Aland Price, officiated at the site.

Marble Falls HS in District Tourney

From Coach Mark Moran

After one day of competition at the 2007 4A 25 district tennis championships, held at Lake Travis High School and Lakeway World of Tennis, only one Marble Falls team remained in the mix. Charlie Kilpatrick and Hannah Mayfield easily won their first two girls doubles matches, defeating Hendrickson 6-2, 6-1 and Connally 6-1, 6-1. In the semifinals, the Mustang duo faced the number three seeded Lake Travis team. The Mustangs played a nervous first set and were down 4-1 at one point, then made a great run only to lose the set 7-5. Gathering confidence from their first set finish, Kilpatrick and Mayfield throttled the Lady Cavaliers in the second set 6-2. After the break, they took the court for the third and decisive set. Both teams served well.  Lake Travis got the early break and held on to win 6-4 sending the Lady Mustangs doubles team into the third place bracket against another Lake Travis team, who were seeded fourth. That match would have to wait until the next day, Wednesday at Lake Travis High School.

On Wednesday, both teams were nervous and struggled to hold serve. Lake Travis won the first set 6-4. Kilpatrick and Mayfield struck back in the second, winning the first two games. The score was tied at 4-4 when Lake Travis broke the Mustangs' serve and then held serve to win the set and the match 6-4, 6-4. Kilpatrick and Mayfield end their season at fourth place in a very tough district.

Other Marble Falls Mustang matches from the District tournament:

Austin Krause defeated Brian Lynch of Hendrickson 6-1, 6-0, then lost to Bill Daniels of Dripping Springs.

Jake Wagner defeated Jasson Umana of Hendrickson 6-1, 6-2, then lost to Zach Nichols of Lake Travis.

Chase Carney and Matt Wescott lost to Hogan and Bergeron of Vista Ridge.

Logan Docherty and Ben Lane defeated Dong and Dennis of Pflugerville Connally 6-3, 6-3, then lost to Benesh and Daniels of Dripping Springs.

Devon Dockery lost to Kaitlyn Kadlecek of Dripping Springs.

Berilyn Daniell and Lauren Jette lost to Guerrero and Nunez of Hendrickson.

Erin Burget and Bryant Mandel defeated House and Adams of Lampasas 6-2, 6-1, then lost to Ragsdale and McKinzie of Lake Travis.

Coach Moran’s Comments: "I thought everyone played a great first round. This is a tough district for us. Austin (Krause) will only get better. Jake has improved ten-fold since the fall season. Chase and Matt both have shown significant improvement. Logan and Ben were a pleasant surprise. Devon impressed quite a few coaches with her play. Berrilyn and Lauren played some great serve and volley points. Erin and Bryant play well together. Charlie and Hannah played their hearts out. Hopefully, everyone on the team will set goals for the summer and hit the courts."

Horseshoe Bay Hosting Gran Prix Jr. Clay Court Open

Horseshoe Bay will host a Capitol Area Tennis Association (CATA) juniors tournament May 26-28, 2007. The event will offer valuable tournament experience on red clay, uncommon (but important) for Texas juniors. There will be both singles and doubles play. Michelle Stallard is tournament director.

Click here to go to the official tournament website (tournament ID no. 809659807 in the TennisLink system). Online registration is available, and registration closes at 11:59 PM on Monday, May 21.

Hill Country High School Championships

From Coach Mark Moran

The Mustang tennis teams competed in the 2007 Hill Country Championships hosted by Fredericksburg on Friday and Saturday, March 23-24. Twenty teams competed in the two day tournament. Friday's matches were suspended by rain late in the morning, but resumed three hours later.

Ben Lane, Logan Docherty, & Fredricksburg hardware

The best finish for the Mustangs came by way of Logan Docherty and Ben Lane, who finished the tournament with a 4-1 record and third place in the boys doubles. Docherty and Lane defeated Dudish/Foster from Austin Bowie 6-2, 6-2, Rupp/Croley of Smithson Valley 6-0, 6-0, and Nunnelly/Byers of Dripping Springs 6-4, 6-4 before losing in the semifinals to Blake and Blake of Fredericksburg. The Mustang team then recovered to win the match for third place, defeating Kaiser/Kucera of Comfort 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Charlie Kilpatrick & Hannah Mayfield in Fredricksburg

In other doubles action, Charli Kilpatrick and Hannah Mayfield defeated Mason's Price and Wooten 6-2, 6-2, and Austin Bowie's Parr and Locke 7-6(5), 6-4 before losing to Dripping Spring's Maldanado and Waite in a three-set quarterfinal.

In mixed doubles, Erin Burget and Bryant Mandel beat comfort's Angell/Richmond 6-1, 6-4, defeated Stout/Franklin of Smithson Valley 6-0, 6-0, then lost a close quarterfinal match to Sweet/Setterbo of Fredericksburg. Berrilyn Daniell and Lauren Jette got a first round bye but then had to face #1 seeds Brehob and McQuilken of Austin Bowie. The Mustang duo played their best tennis but still came up short.

In singles play, Jake Wagner won one and lost one as he beat Dustin Merkel of Llano 6-1, 6-3 but lost to Austin Benesh of Dripping Springs. Austin Krause defeated Nick Wilson of San Antonio Taft 6-1, 6-1, but lost a close match to Rusty Covell of San Antonio Holmes. Ryan Smith fell to eventual champion Grant Calvert of Austin Bowie. Freshmen Devon Dockery and Chase Carney took first round exits thanks to Chelsea Carter of Smithson Valley and Medina's Tyler Eads, respectively.

Coach's comments: "Devon played her heart out in the first set, and then she couldn't recover quick enough in the second set. Chase played hard but never really got on track. Ryan had to play the guy who eventually won the whole tournament. Jake played well at times but it wasn't enough to get past Benesh of Dripping Springs. Austin lost to an inspired San Antonio Holmes player. Berrilyn and Lauren played some of their best tennis against the number one seeded team from Austin Bowie. Charlie and Hannah played well at times but could not put Dripping Springs away when they had the chance. Logan and Ben were the only team to come back for Saturday matches. They started slowly against the hometown team from Fredericksburg and lost. They picked up their games a notch and beat a very good Comfort team to win third place. I think the rain delay got to everyone. There's nothing to do until it stops raining."

Our next tournament will be at Mason Friday and Saturday, March 30-31. It's a short drive, so come join the Mustang cheering section. Finally, the district seeding meeting will be held at the Bluebonnet Cafe Monday, March 26.

HSB Girls Kick . . . er, Succeed in Mason Junior High Invitational

From Sallye Johnson

L-R: Nicole Johnson, Sarah Mason Thomas and Hannah Still

The girls doubles team of Savannah Still and Nicole Johnson joined girls singles player Sarah Mason Thomas to home three first place metals from the 2007 Mason Invitational on Friday, March 23rd.  What a great day for three sixth graders in their first year on the Faith Academy junior high tennis team. All three recently participated in the Craig Kardon clinic at Horseshoe Bay and take lessons and clinics from Michelle Stallard.

Spenco ATA Spring Open.

Horseshoe Bay members Clark Meyers and Ryan Johnson played each other in the consolation bracket of the Spenco Austin Tennis Academy Spring Open.  They played a long 3 hour match in which Clark won a close first set 7-6 (7-4), Ryan fought back to win the second in a squeaker 7-6 (7-0), and Clark finally closed out the match 6-3 in the third.  Clark then lost in three close sets (two more tiebreakers) to Frank Sanchez.

Luke Lawson and Michael holder lost their first-round matches. In the consolation, Luke lost to Payton Kisor of Buda (the first set was a close tiebreaker) and Michael went down hard against #1 seed William Douglas of Austin.  The doubles teams of Ashley Stallard & Sarah Mason Thomas, Ryan Johnson & Tristan Wise, and Luke Lawson & Michael Holder found the competition very difficult, largely because the doubles division was open to champ and super-champ players. Ashley made it to the consolation singles semifinals, wher she lost to Austin's Christina Rodriguez in three sets.

Several of the HSB-area players said they really enjoyed the competition, and that it gave them a look at the next level of competition.

ZATs next month.

Longhorn Tennis Gets Plenty of Help From Hill Country Kids

The U.T. Longhorns, ranked 13, won a hard-fought match against Duke University (5-2) Saturday afternoon, March 17.  Michael Holder, Nicole Johnson (both of Horseshoe Bay), and Joanne Piatek (Marble Falls) helped out as ball kids. (Pictured above in that order, L-R.)

When they're not being ball boys or girls for the Longhorns Tennis Team, you can find them playing league tennis for Horseshoe Bay or a U.S.T.A. Tournament somewhere in central Texas. (Story & photo from Holly & Dave Holder)

(Note: These kids all appear to have some sort of left-hand deformity. Could it be caused by something in the area water supply? Should we tell their parents? There must be a telethon for it.)

Mustang Tournament at Kerrville

From Coach Mark Moran

Ryan Smith with Kerrville first-place trophy

Friday, March 9, 2007, found the Mustang tennis teams in Kerrville Tivy. Leading the way for the Mustangs was senior Ryan Smith who was undefeated in the boys B singles bracket. Smith defeated Julius Guerra of Hondo 6-3 6-3, Randall Simpson of Tivy 6-1 6-0, and Jeff Jayson of Fredericksburg 6-4 6-3.

Freshman Chase Carney finished seventh with a record of 1 and 2. Carney lost in the first round to Jeff Jayson of Fredericksburg, lost to G. Amezcua of Del Rio in three sets but defeated Julius Guerra of Hondo 6-4 6-2.

Sophomore Austin Krause finished 2-1, winning the boys A singles consolation championship.  Krause lost to Daniel Okland of Hondo but then defeated Collin Dill of Kerrville Tivy 6-0 6-1 and J.D. Albrecht of Devine 6-1 6-0.

Juniors Logan Docherty and Ben Lane went 1-2 in the boys doubles, for fourth place. Docherty and Lane received a bye the first round and then defeated Fisher/Brucks of Bandera 6-0 6-0, lost in three sets to Blake and Evans of Fredericksburg, and lost to Kane and Deleon of Kerrville Tivy.

Juniors Charlie Kilpatrick and Hannah Mayfield finished third in the girls doubles bracket, with a 3-1 record. Kilpatrick and Mayfield defeated Garza and Pena of Del Rio 6-3 6-2, defeated Gallegos and Ingram of Kerrville Tivy 4-6 7-6(7-3) and 10-5, lost to Burrer and Currie of Fredericksburg 1-6 3-6, and defeated Daniell and Jette of Marble Falls 6-2 6-2.

Junior Berrilyn Daniell and Sophomore Lauren Jette went 2-2 and finished fourth in the girl's doubles bracket. Daniell and Jette defeated McConnell and VanDeWalle of Bandera 6-4 6-3, defeated Luna and Gloria of Del Rio 6-4 6-3, lost to Henderson and Cody of Kerrville Tivy, and lost to Marble Falls teammates Kilpatrick and Mayfield.

Juniors Erin Burget and Bryant Mandel received a first round bye and then went 2-1 to win third place in the mixed doubles. Burget and Mandel defeated Herrerra and Trevino of Del Rio 6-4 6-2, lost to Evans and Landis of Fredericksburg, and defeated Seibel and Carrillo of Kerrville Tivy 6-3 6-0.

Coach Moran comments, "I think our girls who play both tennis and basketball deserve a lot of credit for playing in the tournament after only practicing with the team for six hours last week. Charlie and Erin came to practice on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday before they played on Friday. Hannah and Charlie played a terrific second round match against Tivy. They dug in and pulled out a gutsy win. Berrilyn and Lauren played together for the first time and did quite well. Erin and Bryant looked like they had played together for a lot longer than they have. Logan and Ben had a lot of opportunities to beat Fredericksburg, but they couldn't close them out.  Austin ran into a great player in Daniel Okland from Hondo. Okland went on to win the tournament. Chase had a slow start but got back on track to win his final match. Ryan's win was a pleasant surprise. He was supposed to play mixed doubles but we had to do some last minute substituting, putting him in the singles division."

2007 Mustang Invitational Held March 2

(From Mark Moran, Mustang Head Coach)

Friday, March 2, was the best day, weather wise, that the Mustang tennis teams have seen during the spring season. Six other high schools joined MFHS to battle it out in five divisions at three separate venues. The high school courts hosted boys', girls', and mixed doubles; boys' singles were played at Marble Falls Middle School; and Meadowlakes Country Club hosted the girls' singles. Coaches Mark Moran, Allen Laughlin, and Julie Docherty ran the three sites.

The Mustangs finished sixth in team standings. Austin Krause led the way for the Mustangs with a 2-2 record and fourth place. Hannah Mayfield went 3-1 to finish fifth in girls' singles, though her excellent play deserved more. Lauren Jette and Ryan Smith went 2-2 (winning two of three 3-set matches) and finished sixth in the mixed doubles. Logan Docherty and Ben Lane went 2-2 in the boys' doubles for a seventh place finish, while their teammates Bryant Mandel and Jake Wagner went 1-3 to finish eighth. Chase Carney went 2-2 for an eleventh place finish. Berrilyn Daniell and Devon Dockery went 0 for 3, as did Matt Wescott. Chase and Matt played well considering their relative lack of varsity experience.

The Mustangs are at Kerrville Tivy next week (Friday, March 9), with additional players from the girls' basketball team (who were in a competing event on March 2). Make the drive and support the team.

Faith Academy Cleans Up in San Antonio

Congratulations to the Faith Academy Varsity Tennis Team on their great success at the San Antonio Fairchild Tournament. Lana Thomas won the girls singles in a tiebreaker. Ryan Johnson won the boys singles. Hannah Still was a girls singles semi-finalist. The doubles team of Chase Penner and Jay Smith got to the quarterfinals and Melanie Fortenberry played girls singles, contributing to the team's taking 3rd out of 22 schools (mostly 4A-6A UIL and TAPPS). There were 37 players in each singles bracket and 20 doubles teams. This tournament experience is a great building block for future meets, district and state!

Horseshoe Bay Hosts Marble Falls Invitational

Horseshoe Bay Tennis Center recently hosted the Marble Falls Invitational junior tennis tournament, hosted by Hyde Park Baptist and Faith Academy. Hyde Park Baptist, San Antonio Christian and Antonian Prep took home the main draw trophies, but Faith Academy's Lana Thomas won yet another trophy (that makes three in one week) this time for the girls singles consolation. Ryan Johnson and Hannah Still advanced to the consolation finals, both losing to Kerrville's Our Lady of the Hills. The Faith Academy team is off to a great pre-district start!

Mayfield Wins in Belton, Makes Champs

(Story thanks to Lee Meade and Sallye Johnson)

Second seed Hannah Mayfield, MFHS sophomore, won the girls' 16 singles at the 2007 Subway-BBI ZAT in Belton on January 6-7. She defeated Marlie Casilas in the final 1-6, 6-2, 1-0 (super tiebreaker 10-4) after winning earlier matches against players from Cedar Park, Round Rock, and Austin. With that win, Mayfield became the second Marble Falls area player to qualify for Champs this year.

Charli Kilpatrick, close to Champs herself, made it to the quarterfinals, where she lost after splitting sets with Kayli Ragsdale of Austin 6-1, 6-7, 0-1 (6-8). Carley Wilson of Spicewood won a match in girls' 14 singles from Bethany Anderson, as did Emily and Lexie Wilson (Spicewood) and Sarah Thomas (Buchanan Dam). Other area competitors at the Subway-BBI juniors tournament included Ryan Johnson, who played up in age to the boys 16s.

Kilpatrick, Other Area Juniors Win at Westwood

(Story thanks to Lee Meade and Sallye Johnson)

Charli Kilpatrick won the girls 18 singles championship in the Michael Malone Junior Classic at Austin's Westwood Country Club Sunday, December 3, 2006. Charli, seeded number 1, beat Austin's Leslie Ann Canter 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 in the semifinals and Nicole Gerentine 7-6, 6-4 in the finals. She was prepared to play an exhibition match with Westwood-based Andy Roddick, but he failed to appear.

Michelle Stallard's HSB-area students had a very successful tournament, winning two titles and playing in several semifinal matches.

Ryan Johnson and Alex Pylypec won the boys 16 doubles, with Alex playing up from the 12s. Ryan won his singles consolation division, beating players from Houston and Georgetown. Alex made it to the boys 12 singles semifinals before losing to John Gramlich of Austin.

It took a foreigner (from Pennsylvania) to defeat Logan Docherty in the boys 18 singles finals. Luke Lawson was winning until he ran into a real foreigner, Australia's Alexander Klincharov, in boys 12 singles semifinals. Klincharov is in the U.S. pursuing an international juniors ranking. Luke and Michael Holder reached the boys 12 doubles semis.

Excellent work all around.

HSB Tennis Garden (there are 12 courts there somewhere). Don't you feel sorry for people who have to play on ordinary courts?

Overpopulation can spoil a good thing. There goes the Barton Creek salamander habitat.

Something got the crowd's attention. Probably Ann.

A well-organized team.

A well- . . . well, a team.

A team in themselves (and pretty smug about it).
