Wines Wins 2009 HSB Men's Championship

Bill Wines has won the Horseshoe Bay Resort Men's Championship for the second year in a row. On an action-packed weekend in October, Bill defeated Gerry Grafa in the semifinal and bested Spencer Davies in the final. Davies had defeated Bill Reid to get to the final round.

Thousands cheered as Wines hoisted the traditional trophy . . . oh, wait, that was Federer at this year's Wimbledon. Anyway, congratulations, Bill!

MFCTA Meeting Minutes

MFCTA Members Meeting Saturday, January 31, 2009 at the MFHS new tennis courts

Attending: Mark Moran, Nancy Herrington, Greg Dyer, Jo Lynn Dyer, Jim McNabb, Jack Frazee, Linda Frazee, Rick Giardini, Dave Kithil

Mark Moran called the meeting to order at 8:00AM. He told us that he has reserved the Marble Falls High School courts each Saturday from 9:00AM until noon through August 1, 2009, for the playday leagues (men and women combined). Discussion about the format of this play ensued, and it was decided to keep it as it is: whoever shows up first gets choice of court.

Mark told us about the USTA conference he and Juli (his wife) had attended in Austin, Mark for general CTA information and Juli for junior tennis information. The USTA is helping pay for the resurfacing of the cement courts by MF Elementary, turning them into 8 quick-start courts for younger players. We voted to reimburse Mark for his convention expenses.

Jim McNabb gave his treasurer's report. On Jan. 1, 2008, we had $3778.35 cash available. In 2008, we paid $813.61 in expenditures (T-shirts, USTA 5-year organization dues, Hidden Falls courts use fee, membership party), leaving us with $2964.74 as of Dec. 31, 2008. With contributions and reimbursing Mark, as of Jan. 31, 2009 we have $2692.29. We have 61 members -- 24 family memberships and 37 individual memberships.

We discussed raising the dues for 2009, but voted (on Dave Kithil's motion) to keep them the same.

Dues for 2009 are due no later than February 28, 2009. An application form is enclosed with these minutes, but you need not need to use it if you are already a member and all your contact information is the same (just send a check for your dues to Jim McNabb, MFCTA Treasurer, 98 Applehead Island, Horseshoe Bay, TX 78657). However, please make sure we have your correct e-mail address! If you need the application form, CLICK HERE and print it out.

If you've let your membership lapse, we'd love to have you rejoin MFCTA association. Now that the high school courts are available, we plan to have more activities than in the past year.

New officers for 2009 were elected. Breck Harrison has resigned from the board; Jim Hawkins was nominated by Greg Dyer to fill that spot and approved by the members present. Dave Holder has resigned as VP of Marketing/Advertising; Bill Reid will perform secretary duties and help with marketing via email and this website. Mark Moran agreed to serve again as president and Jim McNabb as treasurer. Dick Hollenbeck resigned as VP of activities; that will now be a multiperson office -- Juli Moran will coordinate the youth activities; Mark (with help from others) will coordinate adult activities.

Other discussion items:

  • Relay for Life event
  • Fundraiser with the high school tennis players (as Josh Boyd has done in the past)
  • Evening activities (After MFHS courts get lights)
  • Open tournament -- maybe get into the Hill Country rotation with Wimberley, Fredericksburg, Mason, etc. and have a tournament with youth on Thursday/Friday and adults on Saturday/Sunday

Since some members don't have e-mail and some of the e-mail addresses we have are no longer valid, we decided to send these minutes and a membership application form to every current member as well as past and potential members. Nancy and Jo Lynn agreed to handle this.

Meeting adjourned at 9:00AM.

Get your dues in by February 28, 2009!

MFCTA President's Letter

Greetings fellow tennis fanatics!

What a great year we had. No sophomore slump for us. We did quite well considering we did not have any tennis courts at the high school. I am pleased to announce that all of our officers, with the exception of Dick Hollenbeck (who politely declined), have been re-elected. My hat is off to Dick for attempting to corral the craziness of league play. We are currently looking for an individual who can work a few hours a week on scheduling adults or children for tennis events. My goal for this year is to put on a junior and an adult tennis tournament utilizing all of our tennis courts. I would also like to see us have one hundred individual and one hundred family memberships. Lastly, I would like to see us make it a point to inform the Parks and Recreation Department of the lack of public tennis courts in our city parks.

At our last meeting, the decision was made to continue playing Saturday mornings starting at 9AM. First come, first served on the courts. If you snooze, you lose the chance to play on the first or second court.

See you on the court!

Mark A. Moran
President, MFCTA

Memorial Team Tennis Tourney & Reitz Memorial Barbecue

Blue Team Wins; Party Held Anyway

The Reitz family and Horseshoe Bay Resort put on a fine memorial for players who are now on that "Heavenly Team."

The original tournament day was rained out, but most players came back on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009, to play a team-format series. Michelle did a great job, but she padded the Blue Team against everyone else. To be fair, there were excellent players (and enthusiastic ones) on all the teams. Doubles matches in a league format were played on the hard courts, preceded by doughnuts and orange juice and followed by beer. Some participants protested the order of the refreshments. HSB Resort provided thermal mugs for everyone. I don't know what the winning team received (which should tell you that neither Elise nor I was on it). I didn't see any cash change hands.

The barbecue was again held at Quail Point, sponsored by the Reitz family as a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. There was a fine band, Peete Mesquite brought the food, and someone supplied ten kinds of pie. The "Hollywood" theme was a big success, and many in the audience were old enough to name movies like Gone With the Wind (but no one recognized the Mae West movie). Dick Reitz's rum and Coke toast was offered in his memory.

Thanks to those who participated. More thanks to those who donated a little extra. Most thanks to the Reitz folks and HSBR organizers.

If someone will send photos, I'll post the more embarassing ones.

We are again using a tournament format, which will work as follows:

1. There will be four rounds, and each person will play at least three rounds and possibly four. By doing so, we will play out places from 1 to 13. One round will be played each week

2.  The first round will be a round of 16 (since we currently have 13 members in the league). The top three players of the current ladder will have a bye in the first round, and they can meet to play one another the first week. The four players who lose their matches in the first round will play a round robin with one another (i.e., 4 players, 3 matches each).

3. Based on the tournament results, we will have new seedings for next month's tournament, and we will begin the process again.

Below are the rules of play:

  • Matches will played each Monday at ***6 PM*** at the high school, or at a time within one week agreed upon by both players.
  • Matches will be 2 out of 3 sets. If you split sets, you play a third set, not a tiebreak, unless both players agree to a tiebreak prior to beginning the match. If only one player wants to play a tiebreaker instead of a third set, then a third set must be played.
  • If you are unable to play your match at the scheduled time (even if you are on vacation), you must contact your opponent prior to the scheduled match to reschedule to play prior to the next scheduled match. If you and your opponent are unable to reschedule the match, you being the one who could not play on the scheduled match must take a loss.
  • Please report the result of your match to Casey as soon as possible.

Please let Casey know if you have any questions or suggestions.

Area Players Hold 2009 Texas Rankings

Peggy Francis Finishes 2008 No. 1 in Women's 75 Doubles.

Ever search the USTA rankings for the Texas Section? They're a little hard to find, but Gil recently noticed a few friends and I searched out some others. Bear in mind that these things are calculated in several different ways; some of the statistics below come from the 2008 end-of-year standings in TennisLife magazine; the rest are from the Texas Section's May 20 "12 Month Rolling" standings. (Note that some categories listed fewer ranked players than others.)

Burnet's Peggy Francis finished 2008 ranked number one in Women's 75 doubles.

In other women's doubles, Horseshoe Bay's Sherry Anderson is no. 11 in the 45d. Burnet's Martha Gholson is 26 in the 60d; Marjorie Grier of Horseshoe Bay is tied for 31st.

In women's singles, Laura Servise of Kingsland is no. 78 in the open division. Tammie Cozart of Kingsland is tied for no. 13 in the 45s. Peggy Francis is no. 5 in the 75s

In men's doubles, Jim Hawkins and Gil Blount ended the year no. 24 in Men's 70d, and are holding near that rank as of May (ask them about the May, 2009, Westwood Sectionals. Better yet, don't ask.)

In men's singles, Meadowlakes' John Nilson is no. 22 in the 45s (also tied for 37th in the 30s, and no. 46 in the open division). Dale Cody of Kingsland is no. 45 in the 50s. Richard Giardini, Marble Falls, is tied for 70th in the 60s. Bill Wines was TennisLife's no. 50 in the TennisLife 65s, but has increased his ranking to 41 as of May 20. Marvin Lewis and Gil were nos. 22 and 23, respectively, in the 70s.

First Annual Andy Roddick Tennis Classic a Huge Success

140+ Entrants, Adults & Juniors, Great (HOT) Weather

Players came from as far away as Nebraska to compete in the First Annual Andy Roddick Tennis Classic, held June 18-21, 2009 at the Marble Falls High School courts. The weather was predictably hot as competitors from under age 12 to over 82 fought it out for trophies and prizes to benefit Andy Roddick Foundation programs and the tennis center that's coming to CastleRock, Texas.

"Next year's Classic is planned for the new CastleRock facility, though we're pretty sure it we'll need spillover tournament venues at other area courts," said Dave Holder, Tournament Director. "This year was great, considering it was our first anual tournament. Next year will be bigger and better; satisfied players and their families will spread the word across Texas. Thanks go out to all our volunteers, including tournament organizers and desk staff Nancy Herrington, Denise Frasier, Barbara Smith, and Mark Moran; the many sponsors who supported us with products and advertising (see names below), and all the players and their families who came to Marble Falls from around the state, many of whom stayed for several days and enjoyed our community and the Highland Lakes."

The parent-child doubles was the hit of the tournament. Fourteen teams from across the state played a "king-of-the-hill" format Friday evening. It was great family fun on a Father's Day weekend.

The complete results, with scores, are posted on USTA TennisLink (CLICK HERE, then click the "Results" link on the left). (Note that the TennisLink results do not include the Boys' 12s, won by Jared Edwards of Marble Falls with Trey Hilderbrand placing second. Other errors on the TennisLink site include Charli Kilpatrick's name (Denise Frasier substituted for her in the draw before registration closed) with Scott Kilpatrick in the 4.0 Mixed Doubles, Mary Stephens' name (J. Tedhaus subsitiuted for Stephens in the women's 3.5 doubles -- maybe they're the same person), and the misspelling of Ashlee Brunson's name (my fault).

Many local players did very well (see the above link for all the scores, good, bad, or ugly):

Jared Edwards, Cottonwood Shores, won the Boys' 12s.

Jim Cornelius (Marble Falls) & Greg Dyer (Meadowlakes) won the Men's 4.5 Doubles. John Arthur martinez (Cottonwood Shores) & Chuck Michie (Meadowlakes) placed second. Jeff Charlton (Horseshoe Bay) and Scott Kilpatrick (Marble Falls) won the consolation.

Jim Hawkins (Horseshoe Bay) and Mike Silzel (Burnet) won the Men's 3.5 Doubles. Bill Dickey (Marble Falls area) and Bill Reid (Horseshoe Bay) won the consolation (sometimes all you have to do is show up).

Cheryl Bicknell (Lampasas) and Sherry Anderson (Horseshoe Bay) won the Women's 3.5 Doubles. Linda Prewitt (Burnet) and Michelle Walker (Burnet) placed second.

Denise Frasier (Marble Falls) & Scott Kilpatrick (Marble Falls) won the Mixed 4.0 Doubles. Hannah Mayfield (Marble Falls) & Jim Cornelius (Marble Falls) placed second. Marjorie Grier (Horseshoe Bay) and Jim Hawkins (Horseshoe Bay) won the consolation.

Cheryl Bicknell (Lampasas) & Jim Rainbolt (Round Rock) won the Mixed 3.5 Doubles.

Bill Reid (Horseshoe Bay) placed second in the Men's 3.0 Singles. Bill Dickey, Marble Falls area, won the consolation.

Michael Holder (Horseshoe Bay) won the Boy's 14s consolation.

Zane Freeman (Burnet) won the Boy's 16s consolation.

Mark Moran (Marble Falls) won the Men's 4.5 Singles consolation.

Stan Frasier (Marble Falls) won the Men's 3.5 Singles consolation.

If I've left you out, email me and I'll correct it.

Match of the Week

Late-Sunday observers agree that the match of the week was probably the Men's 3.5 Doubles final. Jim Hawkins and Mike Silzel walked onto the court to meet the excellent team of Carter Tannehill (Lago Vista) and Tom Cox (Round Rock), who had just vanquished 6-0, 6-1 a fine team (whose names shall remain lost in the sands of time). The heat was stifling in spite of gale-force winds. The sun was blinding on both sides of the court. Crowds gathered from as far away as the tournament desk to watch these valiant competitors duke it out in the last match of the tournament.

Cox-Tannehill were up 5-2 in the first set when, to Mrs. Cox's (a fine player herself) chagrin, our boys came from behind to tie the set at five apiece. Then it was 6-6 and the set was up for grabs. Hawkins-Silzel won 7-6 in the tiebreak.

Things were looking pretty good in the second set as Hawkins-Silzel surged ahead 3-0. Not so fast, Cox-Tannehill said with their racquets, and tied it at three-all. Back and forth, forth and back, to five apiece in the second. The heat was so bad Mike's lady friend got blisters as she poured fresh water for him on the sidelines. Ach du lieber! the home team lost its serve and suddenly Tannehill, the 6.5 ringer from that I-35 den of iniquity, Round Rock, was serving for the second set. Madre de Dios! Jim and Mike made incredible shots to break back and force a second-set tiebreak. La plume est dans la table! they lost the set 6-7.

It all came down to a 10-point match tiebreak.

Cox-Tannehill came out of the chute fast, racking up three quick points. Hawkins-Silzel rallied, however, and soon the final set was even at five-all. Once again, back and forth, forth and back; the fans were seasick from watching the score tilt up and down. Finally, Cox-Tannehill went up 9-7 and had two match points.

But wait! Silzel won his point. Then Hawkins-Silzel tied it up at nine-all. Then it was 10-all. Finally, as if sensing that this was all the fans could take, Hawkins-Silzel iced the match, jumped the net, and their championship went into the history books along with last year's Federer-Nadal match at Wimbledon.

Local Player Beats Pros, Wins U.S. Open Tix

Jim Cornelius Places Second in First Annual ARF Poker Tournament

Some 32 poker players supported the Andy Roddick Foundation International Tennis Center at CastleRock, Texas, by playing in the First Annual Texas Hold 'em Benefit Tournament, held February 28 at La Quinta in Marble Falls. When the dust had settled, Mark Griffith of Dallas had won first prize, two tickets to a small private concert by Elton John with Andy Roddick and friends. Jim Cornelius, MFCTA tennis player and now-famous poker player, beat everyone else – including two players from the World Series of Poker who lost in the first round – and called his family with the second-place news, "We're going to the U.S. Open!" A Houston player took home the third-place flat screen television.

The evening brought in over $12,000 for the ARF tennis center project, which will be built on Cottonwood Shores land donated by Marley Porter, architect and designer of CastleRock, Texas. Dave Holder and john Arthur martinez have been driving forces behind the fundraising. John Arthur sparked up the festivities with his music as well. Nancy Herrington handled the silent auction beautifully; it brought in several thousand dollars. Morning Day Rotary Club volunteers helped tremendously. THANKS also to the many local businesses and individuals who donated auction items, as well as Grey Goose vodka for generous libations. Their names will be prominently posted on this website as soon as I get a complete list.

Many members of the Roddick family were in the room during the tournament, including Blanch, Jerry, and Lawrence (Andy's parents and brother). They seemed very pleased with the evening and the proceeds for the Foundation. In fact, the Roddicks purchased a beautiful, hand-made Stephen Sherry poker table at the silent auction (a bargain at $2500, about 25% of its retail value). Other silent auction purchases included five luxurious days in Breckenridge, Colorado ($1000), a vintage classical guitar ($200), and books by recently deceased artist and author Lucile Reid Brock. Other items and their donors will be listed as soon as I get the information.

The poker tournament is now an annual Highland Lakes event. The next one is scheduled for the last Saturday in February, 2010, and the La Quinta. The next big ARF fundraising event will be a tennis tournament in Marble Falls. Check this website for details.

Bruno Drescher (12/13/1929 - 2/21/2009)

Bruno Drescher, longtime tennis player and friend to many in Horseshoe Bay and elsewhere, passed away last month. Memorials may be sent to Christ-Yoder Animal Adoption Center (9150 W. Ranch Road, Buchanan Dam, TX 78609) or The Helping Center of Marble Falls (1315 Broadway, Marble Falls 78654).

Andy Roddick Foundation International Tennis Center

Dave Holder, area player, father of junior players, and Director of Fundraising for the Andy Roddick Foundation (ARF) International Tennis Center At CastleRock, sends the following information about the next steps in the ARF plans for a "hub training facility" for their youth tennis programs. As most of you know, Marley Porter's Castle Rock development (near Cottonwood Shores, between Marble Falls and Horseshoe Bay) donated the land for the ARF center, and Marley is doing much of the design.

It is my understanding, though not referred to in the most recent communication from Dave, that the ARF facility will be open to local tennis players and organizations, either publically or through a modest membership program.

Andy Roddick Foundation International Tennis Center site plan. The 17 courts (three covered by a retractable roof) will be located just below the cliffs in CastleRock.

The ARF mission is primarily to provide at-risk youth the opportunity to learn tennis and to compete on local, state and national levels as they prepare for the greater challenges of life. ARF will use the facility to add to its existing programs programs, which combine weekly tennis instruction, mentoring for college, and nutritional counseling to help eliminate the crisis of diabetes and obesity among the America's youth. Dr. Lawrence Roddick recently kicked off a local ARF program that works with the Hill Country Boys and Girls Club. That program joins several others across the U.S.

Fundraising is under way, with many levels of contribution being sought from individuals and businesses. Major donors will be appropriately recognized. The Andy Roddick Foundation is non-profit (FEIN#:20-0014500); donation documents are provided for tax accounting.

Tennis is a sport for life. Andy started playing when he was five, and today travels the world playing in dozens of countries. He formed his foundation for blessing the lives of children when he was 18. Please consider adding your name (or company name) to the list of donors. Imagine what tennis and your gift will do for kids, area tennis, and the Hill Country.

Horseshoe Bay Resort Red Clay Tournament Results

Price Brothers, Anderson & Dyer, Frasier Lead Local Talent With Division Wins

(Photos by Reid, below)

Horseshoe Bay Resort held a very successful statewide USTA levels tournament February 13-15, 2009. The second year of Horseshoe Bay's red clay tournament series is half over. The age-division competition will be held later in the spring. Local players did well against the competition, which included almost 150 competitors from all over the state.

Our own Aland Price and his brother Andy won the men's open doubles by defeating Dunaev and Sweet 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Dunaev/Sweet had beaten second seeds Greg Dyer and Oscar Guillen (Meadowlakes) in the open semifinals as well as john Arthur martinez (Cottonwood Shores) and Mark Moran (Meadowlakes) in the open quarterfinals.

(1) Denise Frasier (Marble Falls) and Alicia Ragan (Austin) defeated (2) Melinda Norris (Marble Falls/Meadowlakes) and Barbara Smith (Burnet) to win the women's 4.0 doubles 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.

Sherry Anderson and Jo Lynn Dyer won the women's 3.5 doubles in an all-local final, defeating Horseshoe Bay's Juhayna Husseini and Winifred Schnars 5-7, 6-4, 6-2.

(1) Mann/Bradley defeated Sheryl and Bruce Anderson (Marble Falls/HSB) in the finals of the 3.5 mixed doubles.

Jeff Charlton (Horseshoe Bay) and Dick Hollenbeck (Spicewood) lost to number one seeds Gonzales and Willman in the semifinals of the men's 4.0 doubles. Scott Kilpatrick and Jeff Leedy lost in the quarterfinals of that division.

In the men's 3.5 doubles, Horseshoe Bay favorite Jim Hawkins and his College Station partner Edward Dyer lost a close semifinal match 6-7, 6-3, 7-6.

Melinda Norris and Jim Hawkins lost to eventual champs Evans/Evans in the mixed 4.0 doubles semifinals, 6-4, 6-3. Charli Kilpatrick and dad Scott made it to the 4.0 mixed semifinals as well, finally losing to number-one seeds Goza/Williams.

Second-seeded Greg Dyer and Nancy Herrington comported themselves well in the open mixed doubles, though they lost in the semifinals 6-2, 6-2.

Dean Travis of Marble Falls made it to the 3.5 singles consolation finals.

Marjorie Grier (Horseshoe Bay), Bill Dickey (Marble Falls), and Brian Martinez (Cottonwood Shores) were also among the competitors. Several of the local players above also competed in other events.

Flames Tennis Results - Our Lady of the Hills & Bracken Christian

(Sallye Johnson, Correspondent)

Faith Academy competed with district rival Our Lady of the Hills (OLH) in Kerrville on Monday March 9, 2009, and hosted Bracken Christian Tuesday. March 10. Last year, OLH’s boys team won district and state, but this year they are playing without their nationally ranked boys singles player, Avery Rux and the Flames are poised to upset them. The boys won all of their matches against Kerrville with the exception of one singles match. Nathan Michie lost to Will Gregory  4-8 while Tyler Cantlon defeated John Blankmon 8-6 in boys singles. In the boys doubles, Ryan Johnson and Chase Penner beat Ben Gregory and Austin Reyes 8-2. Travis Michie and Nathan Michie defeated Josh Smith and Ben Gregory 8-2.

Taylor Hicks defeated Maria Ullman 8-7 in girls singles. In girls doubles, Deanna Hoover and Brittany Scott defeated Emily Hensley and Kamryn Cammack 8-5. Kristin Lookabaugh and Evan Noxon lost to OLH's Mary Blaire Dickenson and Judy Weinstein. Mary Blaire Dickenson and Emily Hensley defeated Melanie Fortenberry and Micah Streety 8-3. Flames singles players Hannah Still and Taylor Hick teamed up for a "fun" doubles match and defeated Ulman/Cammack 8-7 (7-1).

On Tuesday, the Flames hosted Bracken Christian. The Flames boys doubles team remain undefeated in district competition. Ryan Johnson and Chase Penner defeated Buddy Taylor and Daniel Graves 8-0. Travis Michie and Jordan Bland also defeated Taylor/Graves 8-2 and Daniel Lockerbie and K.C. Day 8-6. Nathan Michie beat Trevor Tabler 8-1. Tyler Cantlon lost to Tabler 8-2 in boys singles.

Bracken’s four girls will be playing doubles at district. Megan Mahaffey is moving from singles competition to doubles. Mahaffey and doubles partner Eryn Shaeffer defeated Brittany Scott and Deanna Hoover and Melanie Fortenberry and Micah Streety 8-2. Fortenberry/Streety beat Sarah Evans and Shandi Flournoy 8-2, but Evans/Flournoy beat Faith Academy's doubles team of Kristin Lookbaugh and Eva Noxon.

The Flames are off for a week for spring break. They host their next district match at 3:00 on Monday, March 23rd at Horseshoe Bay with Khabele, Waldorf School of Austin, and Trinity Christian Academy of San Antonio.

Bryan Brothers Clinic in HSB, Reception

If a reporter had asked the Bryan brothers last week, "You've just won the U.S. Open; what will you do now?" Bob & Mike would have said "We're going to Horseshoe Bay!" They and Sam Querrey, who comported himself very well in singles in the same tournament and has just joined Patrick McEnroe's U.S. Davis Cup team, spent a couple of hours on the HSB Resort red clay courts September 10, 2008, with some 25 lucky contributors to Landy Warren's Children of Fallen Soldiers education foundation (www.childrenoffallensoldiers.com). Tim Stallard's ProLink sports entertainment company arranged the visit, Michelle and Aland Price ran the clinics and reception, HSB Resort provided the venue and a gala reception, USTA representatives (including Katy Rogers and Todd -- anyone know his last name?) were here for tennis support, and everyone had a great time.

Video Analysis to Add to HSB Tennis Center Lessons

Michelle Stallard and Aland Price have a new trick up their sleeves to enhance progress for both adult and juniors who participate in their HSB Tennis Center lessons. Instant video of students' play can show -- and set the stage to improve -- swing, court movement, body positioning, and more. "Feel" alone is not enough, or not efficient enough, for many players. We listen hard and try to understand what we're doing wrong, but it's impossible to see what the coach sees, and visualize what we need to change. On-court video changes all that.

Women Welcome as Subs for Men's League

Women with nothing better to do on Saturday mornings than humiliate male tennis players are welcome to sign up as subs in the Men's league. We play at 8:30 most Saturdays. Please see the schedule and rules (above and in the MFCTA section, then contact Dick Hollenbeck at the email address or phone number on the schedule.

And contact Elise Reid if you want to play on Wednesday evenings.

Bids Taken for CastleRock Roddick Courts

Bids have begun to be received for the first 8 courts at CastleRock. The specifications bids include subsurface cable tensioning to prevent cracking and heaving, fencing, and lights. The court slab will be 120x120 feet, to allow plenty of room between courts, particularly during tournaments and doubles play.

We can't reveal the details of companies or estimates, but things are progressing nicely.

Ray Lesikar Appreciation

Horseshoe Bay players and former players gathered at the Yacht Club early in October, 2008, to give a fond sendoff to Horseshoe Bay's "Mr. Tennis," Ray Lesikar, warm friend and unflinching Horseshoe Bay tennis player for many decades who played regularly until very recently, and remains a font of tennis knowledge and advice. Ray has just moved to Cedar Park to be near family. He will keep his Horseshoe Bay house indefinitely, for family use.

Gil Blount opened the remarks, recounting not only Ray's tennis prowess (e.g. club champion in his early 70s -- not the '70s, his 70s), but also his leading and shepherding men's tennis, helping others (sometimes with painful honesty) to find their places in the local lineup, and encouraging even those who would never reach his level of play. Others in the room provided anecdotes and good wishes, promising to keep in touch over the 40 miles or so between HSB and Cedar Park. At last contact, (about October 8) Ray was doing well, having just completed the moving process.

MFCTA Board/Officers Meeting Minutes

(Sunday, January 27, 2008, 3:00 p.m. at Dick Hollenbeck's house)

The meeting was called to order by outgoing President Julie Docherty at 3:10 p.m.

Present: Board members - Greg Dyer, Julie Docherty, and Nancy Herrington. 2008 officers - (Pres.) Mark Moran, (VP of Activities) Dick Hollenbeck, (VP of Market/Advertising) Dave Holder, (Treasurer) Jim McNabb

Absent: Board member - Breck Harrison, 2008 officer - (Secretary) Bill Reid, (USTA Coordinator) Michelle Stallard

Julie gave Mark Moran the President's folder, containing information regarding the formation of our MFCTA, our by-laws and incorporation papers, our USTA membership certificate, etc. She also said she had changed the MFCTA contact information on the USTA/CTA website to reflect our new officers. Julie also reminded everyone that if any "play" is scheduled for the high school courts, someone needs to file (or get Julie to file for them) a facility use request form with the high school to avoid possible conflicts with other tennis activities.

Nancy told everyone how to get into the MFCTA e-mail account at nctv.com. She also gave Jim McNabb a copy of the minutes from the annual January meeting in which he is authorized to have his name added to the bank signature card at American Bank. She also requested that he have the bank start sending the bank statements to him. Jim said he would take care of this.

In answer to Bill Reid's question about the area our CTA includes, Nancy said it is registered with USTA as covering Marble Falls, Horseshoe Bay, Llano, Kingsland, Granite Shoals, Spicewood, and Burnet. Dave Holder mentioned that some of the Burnet tennis association people had talked about joining our CTA. Mike Slizel from Burnet is also an MFCTA member, and Mark Moran or Dick Hollenbeck or Jim McNabb (someone who plays with the men's group) might talk with Mike for further information. Also, Mark said he would contact the Burnet coach to see if he knows any more about it.

Dave Holder reminded us that if someone wants something in the newspapers, we need to tell him. He also reviewed the latest goings-on at Castlerock. The USTA is involved as is the Andy Roddick Foundation; however, neither group has committed to a certain amount of money they're willing to put up towards helping the Castlerock courts get built. Further discussion involved the high school courts being "gone" as of May 1 and the safety factor of the courts at the Middle School.

That led to a discussion of events the MFCTA might sponsor. Mark Moran mentioned a men's league, a women's league - Dick asked about a mixed league. Mark also mentioned talking again to the Marble Falls Parks and Recreation committee about town tennis courts. We discussed a Relay for Life event. Due to construction, Relay will hold their walk at the Middle School track on June 6-7, but with the high school courts not available and the MS courts not being safe, if we did anything, it would have to be done at Horseshoe Bay. Mark also mentioned other ideas -- a double swing tournament (a golfer playing with a tennis player and vice versa), a silent auction BBQ (with auction items being donated from the community), a city- or county-wide championship, and an MFCTA scholarship.

Before making decisions about new leagues, it was decided that the cost of dues will remain the same ($15.00 individual; $30.00 family) and that dues will be on an annual basis, ending Dec. 31. Beginning next January, dues renewal will happen on or before the annual January business meeting (with an e-mail notice being sent to members in December when reminding them of the annual meeting). Since that can't happen this year, members must renew their dues prior to participating in any of the new events, i.e., prior to March 1st. Jim McNabb will send out an e-mail to all MFCTA members telling them this.

Decisions made about leagues were then finalized. Dates were set based on the use of the high school courts and not conflicting with the high school tennis team plans.

Men's league - Saturdays at 9:00a.m. - will run from March 1-April 19

In his e-mail, Bill Reid had indicated that Jim Hawkins has said he would help organize another one. Dick will check with Jim. Discussion as to the format of the new league led to the following decision --- four weeks of random pairings with king-of-the-hill format (3 no-ad sets) and keep track of individual scores as well as which courts players finished on; then, based on the prior 4 weeks' results, in last 4 weeks, divide into two "ability" levels

Ladies' league - Wednesday nights at 6:00 p.m. - run March 5-April 23

In his e-mail, Bill Reid had also indicated that his wife, Elise, would help organize a women's league. The same format the men will use (king-of-the-hill, 4 weeks and 4 weeks) will also be used for the women; however, women will play only two 8-game pro sets a night. Mark Moran will contact Elise (as will Dick Hollenbeck if Jim Hawkins doesn't need him to help with the men's league).

There was discussion about setting another meeting, but it was decided that was not needed at this time. Any “business” could be done via e-mails. There being no further business to attend to, Dave Holder moved we adjourn; Mark Moran seconded, and all voted to adjourn at 5:30 p.m.

ACTION ITEMS:

Mark -- contact Burnet tennis player/coach re: Burnet's association; contact Elise Reid re: women's league; follow up on possibility of using HSB courts for some sort of charity fundraiser event.

Dick -- contact Jim Hawkins re: men's league and maybe Elise Reid re: women's league.

Jim -- go to American Bank and switch name/address/etc.; send e-mail to all MFCTA members re: dues renewal deadline.

-- Minutes by Nancy Herrington (with our thanks), due to Bill Reid's absence.

Roddick Tennis Foundation Castle Rock Update

(Press release from Dave Holder & Castle Rock)

COTTONWOOD SHORES, TX (December 14, 2007) -- The Andy Roddick Foundation (ARF), in cooperation with CastleRock Texas, The City of Cottonwood Shores, and the Marble Falls Community Tennis Association, announces plans to establish an 8.2 million dollar green and sustainable tennis facility in the Texas Hill Country. The Andy Roddick Foundation International Tennis Center will be built on land contributed by the partners of CastleRock Texas, located on Ranch Road 2147 in Cottonwood Shores, Texas.

"On behalf of the CastleRock Texas partners, Ludwig Kuttner, Robert Peerman and myself, we're over-the-top-excited to put up the land for the Andy Roddick Foundation International Tennis Center," said Marley Porter, CastleRock builder-architect. "And to think that this center will help kids for generations to come . . . that's what giving and CastleRock are all about," he added.

The ARF International Tennis Center will serve as the central training facility for the Andy Roddick Youth Tennis Program, which provides at risk youth an opportunity to learn the game of tennis and to compete on local, state and national levels. Its efforts to curtail the rising incidence of diabetes and obesity among American youth include instruction in nutrition and mentoring programs geared toward college readiness.

Top-ranked American tennis star Andy Roddick, 26, founded his foundation at the young age of 17, when he realized he was in a position to positively influence the lives of children. On October 3, 2007, his foundation implemented its youth tennis program in San Antonio in cooperation with the Rene Lacoste Foundation, The USTA Tennis and Education Fund, Our Lady of the Lake University and The Boys and Girls Club of San Antonio.

Plans for the CastleRock facility emerged from efforts by the Marble Falls Area Community Tennis Association (MFCTA) to find land for public courts. David Holder, marketing director of MFCTA, contacted local musician and tennis enthusiast, john Arthur martinez for assistance. "I asked my friend Marley Porter to do some drawings to seed the donation process. I was floored when he responded that he would not only do the initial drawings but would donate the land for the facility," Martinez explained. "The plans to create the most green and sustainable tennis facility in the world, with a proposed retractable roof over several of the courts, I knew would generate some interest."

Porter was recently recognized by Natural Home and Garden as one of the top ten green architects in America. Porter's drawings moved Sal Castillo of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) to invite Dr. Lawrence Roddick and Blanche Roddick to meet with Porter and the MFCTA. Castillo pointed out that no one has yet created a tennis facility with a retractable roof in the United States. After several meetings and phone conferences, all parties agreed to move forward with the announcement of the ARF International Tennis Facility.

"The Andy Roddick Foundation looks forward to a long and rewarding relationship with CastleRock in developing well-rounded children and tennis players," said Dr. Lawrence Roddick of the Andy Roddick Foundation. "The Foundation is committed, in principle, to establishing the tennis center at CastleRock and will work together with CastleRock to raise funds to build the tennis facility," he added.

Sal Castillo commented, "CastleRock and the Andy Roddick Foundation International Tennis Center has the USTA's full support."

Dennis Hill, Superintendent of Llano Independent School District (LISD) and Dr. Ryder Warren of Marble Falls Independent School District (MFISD) have both expressed interest in using the facility for district and invitational tournaments.

For more information on the Andy Roddick Foundation International Tennis Center at CastleRock please contact john Arthur martinez at (830) 798-9310 or David Holder at (830) 598-6697.

Happy Kid

Last Tuesday, June 17, 2008, hundreds of members of the media (well, several anyway) came to watch the very first day of the Andy Roddick Foundation/Boys & Girls Club youth tennis program for the Marble Falls and Highland Lakes area. The program, which is also available in some other Texas cities and one Idaho location, works with additional funding from the Rene Lacoste Foundation and USTA to combine tennis instruction with mentoring for college and special nutritional counseling to deal with childhood obesity and diabetes.

Mark Moran and john Arthur martinez worked with groups of kids (who were provided with new, kid-sized racquets) as cameras clicked and pens scratched on reporters' notepads. Dr. Lawrence Roddick, Director of Andy Roddick Youth Tennis Programs, was there for the opening. He brought a racquet used by Andy in his US Open win, which will be donated for an auction or raffle to boost funding for the Andy Roddick Foundation International Tennis Center, planned for the CastleRock Texas development on RR 2147.

Site plans for the International Tennis Center show 17 courts (three indoors), with a retractable roof and very "green" building practices. Although open to the community, the Foundation programs will focus on disadvantaged youth, "teach(ing) children to be not only better tennis players, but better citizens of the world." Local and regional Tennis Center Advisory Board members include Sol Castillo (USTA Texas), Carol Welder (USTA Texas & CATA), Dave Holder (director of fundraising), Marley Porter (CastleRock developer & lead architect), john Arthur martinez (well-known country singer, fine player & CastleRock director of creative marketing), Gil Reyes (Adidas coaching team & former Agassi trainer), and Dr. Lawrence Roddick. Andy Roddick Foundation Honorary Board Members include Sir Elton John, professional golfer Ben Crenshaw, extraordinary cyclist and health activist Lance Armstrong, Violinist and Dave Matthews Band member Boyd Tinsley, and Andy's agent, Ken Myerson.

Expect to see announcements of International Tennis Center fundraisers and donation opportunities soon. For more information, or to volunteer for the kids' program, contact the Andy Roddick Foundation International Tennis Center at CastleRock Texas, 4401 Cottonwood Drive, Cottonwood, TX 78657. Phone (830) 798-9310. Fax (830) 798-9304. Email john Arthur martinez or Dave Holder. If the spirit really moves you and you wish to donate to the International Tennis Center fund right away, make your check out to the Andy Roddick Foundation, be sure to write "CastleRock" on the front of the check, and mail it to either the Foundation or CastleRock. Every little bit helps.

Andy Roddick Foundation Launches Hill Country Youth Tennis Program

In a Castle Rock press release dated May 1, 2008, Dave Holder wrote that Dr. Lawrence Roddick, Director of Youth Programs for the Andy Roddick Foundation (ARF), has just announced the launch of the foundation's first tennis programs in the Texas Hill Country. The programs are in cooperation with the Boys and Girls Club of the Highland Lakes, and will begin June 2, 2008, at the Marble Falls Middle School courts. The Andy Roddick Youth Tennis Program developed in September, 2007, from the vision of Rene Lacoste, the experience of the Roddick family, and financial support from the Rene Lacoste Foundation, the USTA Tennis & Education Foundation, and the ARF. With the launch of these programs, ARF begins the fundraising campaign to build the Andy Roddick Foundation International Tennis Center at CastleRock Texas in Cottonwood Shores.

"I am in a position to make a difference, and feel a certain responsibility to make one of my goals contributing positively to my communities," said Andy Roddick, founder of ARF. "By helping at-risk and underprivileged children through my foundation, we can make this goal a reality."

After turning professional in 2000, it took Andy only one year to turn his sights off the court and onto his community. In 2001, he began the Andy Roddick Foundation, a charity dedicated to "Helping Children Today for Tomorrow." The goal of the foundation is to improve the quality of life and enhance educational and economic opportunities for all children based on the principles of respect for family, education and morality.

The programs will focus on children 6 to 10 years old and will be led by husband-wife team Mark and Julie Moran of Marble Falls. Mark currently coaches the Marble Falls Middle School tennis teams. Julie, a former collegiate competitor and a certified teacher, will assist Mark in the summer programs and then assume the reigns in the fall.

The Boys and Girls Club offers programs and services that promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence. The Boys and Girls Club of the Highland Lakes is now nearly 1,000 members strong and offers a safe place for youth to learn and grow while having fun.

"It is so important to employ a wide variety of activities to inspire and motivate such a huge variety of young personalities! Tennis is a sport that can be incorporated for the rest of their lives regardless of economic status. It will significantly improve the physical health of some children," said Deedy Atkins, Boys & Girls Club Unit Director.

John Racz, Board of Directors and Resource and Development Chairman added, "The summer tennis program fits in beautifully with our current goals and programs."

Dr. Ryder Warren, Superintendent of M.F.I.S.D., commented that "The Marble Falls School District gladly offers the middle school facilities for such a worthwhile endeavor."

To sign up for the ARF summer tennis programs contact: The Boys and Girls Club of the Highland Lakes at (830) 798-2582. Participant registration for current Boys and Girls Club members will be held May 5-9, 2008, at the Boys and Girls Club facility at 1701 Broadway Street in Marble Falls. Nonmembers will register May 12-16.

For more information concerning the fundraising campaign for the Andy Roddick Foundation International Tennis Center please contact john Arthur martinez, jam@281.com or Dave Holder, davecars@zeecon.com, (830) 598-5950.

Former HSB Player & Current Booster Turns 90

Here she is, with great granddaughter Grace Reid, who came all the way from Denver to be with Lucile Reid Brock on her 90th birthday. Lots of tennis friends were among the partygoers at Quail Point on June 7, 2008, honoring Mom, who still really enjoys the HSB tennis luncheons.

Horseshoe Bay Mavericks Hold Shootout, Nobody Wounded

(Photos by Don Victorin)

Don Victorin did a great job planning and ramrodding the annual Spring Shootout at Horseshoe Bay Resort Tennis Center April 11 and 12, 2008. Twelve players competed in a World-Team-Tennis-like two-day rotation on three of the red clay courts. Michelle and the Tennis Center supplied donuts and some of the prizes. Entrance fees were distributed to the big winners.

Yes, I played. Don't ask.

Players supplied the vittles for a fine picnic at the Applehead Island pool, hosted by Bob Goodman (the top gun this year). Alan Schmidt was remembered in a special way.

The March 28-30, 2008, Horseshoe Bay Resort/USTA Red Clay Senior/SuperSenior tournament was a big success, even if local players were sometimes outplayed by those from elsewhere in the State (and a couple from outside Texas). Denise Frasier of Marble Falls, won both the women's 50s doubles (with her partner Jacqueline Davis) and the women's singles consolation. Melinda Norris (Horseshoe Bay) and Barbara Smith (Burnet) placed second to Frasier/Davis in the women's 50s doubles, and Bill Wines of Horseshoe Bay won the men's 65s consolation trophy. Some of us (speaking only for myself) felt pretty good just winning a few games.

Here are some photos of nice people.

The Fix Was In

I had nothing to do with the fact that my wife, my mother, and I won three of the 16 door prizes offered by Michelle and Aland at the Spring, 2008 Tennis Banquet. I can only say that it seemed fair, since we had to sit closest to Celebrity Emcee Gil Blount as he held forth with jokes about nuns wielding bedpans (you had to be there).

The Banquet, held on Sunday, February 24, was a big success, with some 64 attendees filling tables at the Resort, sipping complimentary champagne and dining on pasta & chicken. There was an opportunity to thank Ann Wright and the Whitewater staff, and to offer a small souvenir (which won't last long) to Michelle and Aland for their hard work over the past year. There really were 16 door prizes, ranging from gift certificates, to cases of balls, to a brand new Head racquet. I hope someone will send me a few photos to post.

Dyer & Gold Win a Big One, No. 1 in Texas 4.5d

Greg Dyer (left) and Greg Gold with 1st place hardware. (Photo by Jo Lynn Dyer)

Top-seeds Greg Dyer (Meadowlakes) and Greg Gold of Austin won the NTRP 4.5 Doubles at the recent Texas Sectional tournament in San Antonio. The won a series of tough matches against other ranked players before defeating former Bolletieri Academy coach Charlie Rivera and former Baylor coach David Luedeke (both of Waco) 7-6, 6-0 in the finals. The competition in the final match was fierce, and slightly marred by a couple of umpire sportsmanship calls against Rivera (one allegedly involving a clash between a racquet and a netpost; the racquet was fatally wounded).

The 600 ranking points they won in the sectional bolster Dyer's and Gold's number one rank in Texas 4.5 doubles (by a substantial margin). They were tied for number one prior to the tournament. USTA Sectional tournaments are larger and more competitive than local ones, offering far more ranking points to attract the state's best players.

Jo Lynn Dyer and Jennifer Harrison of Meadowlakes also played in the sectional, making it to the round of 16 in the women's 3.5 doubles before losing two tie-break sets to 5th-seed Martha Moon and Andrea Zomer of Corpus Christi.

HSB U.S. Open Social

Horseshoe Bay players and friends enjoyed a few hours of cutthroat competition before settling down to drinks and snacks and watching the men's final of the U.S. Open on September 10. Michelle and Aland guided play on hard and clay courts. Aland gracefully lost his serve in one of the matches. All in all, it was a charicature of doubles play at the Open, with booze. Jim learns the importance of poise & posture.

You gonna eat that?

No sarcasm, just nice folks.

Roddick Dedicates HSB Children's Courts

On July 19, Andy Roddick came to Horseshoe Bay to dedicate the Andy Roddick USTA Kids' Courts at Horseshoe Bay Tennis Center. There was a great turnout of HSB folks, area tennis players, USTA and USTA Texas officials, and Horseshoe Bay Resort dignitaries to fill the bleachers and watch Roddick and HSB pro Aland Price work with the first "official" group of youngsters. Michelle Stallard got compliments all around for her innovation and hard work toward making these courts a reality. The USTA voiced its appreciation to her and to Horseshoe Bay for donating the land. Austin television stations took lots of video, including some of Ashley Stallard holding her own as she rallied with Andy on the shortened courts (she holds her own on full-sized courts as well).

Peggy Francis, Local Player, Nationally Ranked

Peggy Francis of Delaware Springs, near Burnet, has been playing national tournaments since she was 15, when she first graced the National Grass Court Championships in Germantown, PA. She'll return to that venue to play in the women's 75s singles next year. She has fond memories of the Pennsylvania houses and landscape, which were unusual for "a girl from El Paso."

Peggy started playing in the sixth grade, recalls being on the high school team in El Paso, and was tennis coach at Eastwood High. She was always ranked number 1 or number 2 for her age in the Southwest. She and her partner, San Antonio’s Joan Kingsley, have been ranked as high as number 2 in the U.S. in Women's 70s doubles, and are currently number one in Texas 70s.

Peggy and Joan regularly play in the national championships on all four surfaces (hard, clay, grass, and indoor); Peggy has done it since 1988. Their most recent was the May, 2007, hard court nationals in La Jolla, CA.

International Friendship Cup

In November, 2006, Peggy and Laura Leach, of Boston, were invited to Japan to represent the U.S. in the Friendship Cup. The pair finished second in an outstanding field of 70s women, finally losing to the Japanese team. Only one other U.S. team, the 80s women, placed higher. Peggy's husband Jim was there to watch her play.

The Friendship Cup was endowed by Mr. Suzuki, who left funds to support the international series when he passed away at age 99. Teams came from many different countries, including Japan, the U.S., Canada, Australia, and Taiwan. The age-group format covers ten years rather than five, from 50s to 80s, for both men and women. Unfortunately, the Suzuki funds have dwindled with time; 2006 will be its final year.

An Approachable Champ

The final good news is that Peggy is a staple in Highland Lakes area tennis, playing several times a week with the "A" ladies (who occasionally let men fill in as subs). She's one of the nicest players around, but don't expect her to go easy on you just because you're male.

HSB Clinics with Michelle Stallard

Michelle, an experienced teacher, coach, and all-around nice person, regularly offers clinics for both juniors and adults. They are open to both members and nonmembers, for various fees. If you have any doubts, read about her successes in the Juniors Section. Click here for the Summer, 2007 Juniors program or call the HSB Tennis Center (830-598-2591) for more information.

HSB Kids Courts Completed

The USTA-sponsored children's courts planned for the HSB Tennis Center have become a reality. As of mid-June, Dobbs Tennis Courts of Austin was completing the surfacing and some mysterious metal framing for structures had appeared. In late June everything was finished and the courts were in use. Michelle told me not to spread it around, but she and husband Tim (who is mentioned in a recent television special on Jim Courier's InsideOut and Courier's Kids special) are working to bring a major star to Horseshoe Bay for the dedication. DO NOT TELL MICHELLE THAT I TOLD YOU.

MFCTA Men Play Wimberley & San Marcos

I'm not sure how we did in the end, but Jim H. was frantically writing down winning scores. Bruce's and mine weren't among them.

The Wimberley folks extended fine hospitality, including a great barbecue spread and restrooms only half a mile away. Lots of MFCTA spouses and kids came as well. The artsy photos were taken by Gil, Elise, and me. I started to label them with names and funny titles, but it got out of hand. Make some up (no prizes).

If you didn't make the cut, it's probably because you were blurry, or a victim of shrinking bandwidth. If anyone has additional photos, email them to me and I'll try to post some of them (I get to decide which ones).

Price Arrives at HSB Tennis Center

Aland Price is the new head tennis professional at the Horseshoe Bay Tennis Center, complementing Director of Tennis Michelle Stallard. Aland is a former All-American singles and doubles player for Abilene Christian University, and comes to us from Birchwood Tennis and Fitness Club in Abilene (where he was Director of Tennis). You should also know that he has a great reputation as a teacher of adults and juniors, is very pleasant and good looking (just like all those California pros in the movies), and has a pony tail. That won't be hard to spot on the Horseshoe Bay courts.

MFCTA Men's League Underway

(See photo at top of page.) It was cooler than usual, but a dry, calm day on Saturday, March 17, 2007, when the new MFCTA 3.0+ men's league started official play at the MFHS courts. Largely organized by Jim Hawkins under USTA aegis, 24 men signed up and 16 were present for the inaugural matches. Jim introduced Julie Stice Docherty, MFCTA President and announced a couple of birthdays. The pre-match fellowship, gently encouraged by Jim's coaching whistle, should be a part of the next 24 weeks of play, in which each member will get to play with and against every other in a friendly king-of-the-hill format.

HSB Tourney Big Success

By the time many of you read this, you'll know that the Horseshoe Bay Tennis Center pre-banquet doubles tournament was a phenomenal success. The courts were filled on Saturday, February 17, with at least 46 A men & women, B women, and Mavericks.

Doubles teams from HSB and the surrounding area, some as far away as San Antonio, played up to seven one-set matches in a round robin format. Members had a chance to play some nonmember friends and strangers in the mix, and the competition was fierce. The tournament was very well organized and staffed (no surprise). The big turnout extended play beyond the predicted hour; no one complained. There were hors d'oeurves and margaritas after play. I was too busy playing to take many photos, or to get details of the other sections, but everyone I saw was smiling through his or her sweat (sorry ladies, I meant "dew").

I was allowed to join the A men for a change, and played with Larry Brumfield. With his serve, his forehand, his backhand, and his speed at the net, we made a great team. How else could I ever say I won a few service games against the likes of Gil, Jim, john Arthur, Scott, and Gerry?

MFCTA Kickoff Successful

The Marble Falls Community Tennis Association (MFCTA) had a fine kickoff event on January 27. Over 40 adults and kids attended and got prestigious MFCTA t-shirts. Most played mixed doubles in a morning "king of the hill" tournament. Sal Castillo, USTA Texas Section Service Representative, set up a mini-court for the youngest, inexperienced kids, who played mini-tennis with Nerf balls (see article above on kids' courts coming to Horseshoe Bay Tennis Center). Lunch was served, and there were drawings for door prizes provided by the USTA.

Many thanks go out to business sponsors Edwards Risk Management, Inc. (prevention is better than cure), Central Texas Glass (you break it, you bought it), Consultants Advertising Retail Sales (not sure what they do, but it's appreciated), Pottery Ranch, (how many pots does it take to qualify for an agricultural exemption?), Charlie's Tennis Services (now, who could that be?), Moe's Restaurant (great pizza), and Jim's Electric (highest voltages in the area).

Here's what Pat Dickey said about the MFCTA event:

The (MFCTA) tennis tournament was great. I think there were about 40 people there. The courts were full. We had ages from old ones, me, to Luke. The tennis was great and some outstanding players were there. Some of our A ladies were there along with a couple of the A men.

We played a rotation of four games, then the losers moved over to the next court and the winners stayed and switched partners so we got to meet, greet and had a REALLY good time.

We had a lunch and barbequed hamburgers that were cooked on a grill they brought over. We had drinks chips and in the morning orange juice and donuts.

They really did a bang up job, we met a lot of good fun tennis players and everyone was extremely nice, polite and encouraging for the players like me who were not so good. The level of all the players were very very high with open players, 5.0 players, and some really good outstanding players, and there was some GREAT competetion for the good players but the format was conducive to all players. Good job and we are all looking forward to the next event.

If that's not reason enough to join (mfcta@nctv.com), there will be another event in the Spring.

Marble Falls, HSB Kids Win May, 2009, HSB Junior Open

Dave Holder sends this story. Know of other local winners/placers? Send them to me.

Last weekend at the Horseshoe Bay Junior Clay Court Open, young local athletes shone! Hard work and a lot of tennis lessons paid off for some Marble Falls students.

Jered Edwards won the Boys 12 singles by defeating Benjamin Heck from Georgetown. Michael Holder won the Boys 14s by defeating Tanner Parten of Horseshoe Bay. Kelly Dowell won the Girls 16s over Katie Shaw of Lampasas.

Faith Boys Win TAPPS 2A State Championship

Girls Tie for Third Place

Faith Academy had a great State tournament in Waco earlier this month, winning the boys' team Championship and tying for third place in the girls' division. More details soon.

Chase Penner and Ryan Johnson won the boys doubles championship. Jordan Bland and Travis Michie made the boys doubles semifinals. Nathan Michie was a boys singles quarterfinalist; John Bennett was a boys doubles alternate.

Hannah Still was a girls singles semifinalist. Deanna Hoover and Brittany Scott made the girls doubles quarterfinals. Taylor Hicks was a District girls singles alternate; Eva Noxon was a District girls doubles alternate.

The boys won the schools first state boys championship in the history of the school. The girls have won a state championship but the boys best past finish has been runner-up.

Here are the boys' details, from Sallye Johnson:

The Faith Academy Tennis Team was honored to bring home the university model schools first boys state championship by winning the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) State Tennis Tournament in Waco on Saturday. The boys doubles teams finished first and third and the boys singles advanced to the quarterfinals.

Nathan Michie, who won the boys doubles championship last year with his twin brother Travis, beat Stefan Bushey from Abilene Christian School 6-0, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals. Nathan lost to Matt Hayes of Northeast Christian 6-1, 6-0, but his victory was enough to help the team to win the championship. Faith Academy beat Brazos Christian by a half of a point, claiming the title 19.5 to 19. Dallas Cambridge finished in third place with 12, Kerrville Our Lady of the Hills fourth with 9.5, and Trinity Longview in fifth place.

In the boys doubles competition, Ryan Johnson and Chase Penner won the championship match to secure the team title. Jordan Bland and Travis Michie were semi-finalists. Bland and Michie beat Austin Cole and Brantley Houston of Abilene Christian 6-0, 6-0 in their opening round match on Friday. In the quarterfinals, they upset the no. 3 seeded team of Ari Disraeli and James Smiser from Fairhill, 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the second day of the tournament, where they lost to Austin Rogers and Luke Rother 5-7, 6-4, 5-7 in a three set match.

In the championship match, Penner and Johnson dominated the first set by winning 6-1, but Rogers and Rother started dominating at the net and won the second set 6-2.  In the third set, the Faith boys were up 5-3, 40-30 with Johnson serving for the championship. The return went into the net and Penner & Johnson claimed the boys doubles and Faith team victory.

Chase Penner, Nathan Michie, John Bennett, Asst. Coach Todd Still, Jordan Bland

Here's the complete story on the girls from Sallye:

Faith Academy competed in the TAPPS State Tennis Tournament April 24-25 in Waco. Hannah Still defeated Brittany Howard of Cambridge 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 16 and played one of the best matches of her high school career by defeating the no. 2 seeded player, Grace Haines from Allen Academy in Bryan. HSB Resort hosts Juniors Jump Start Invitational

The HSB Resort Tennis Center Andy Roddick Kids' Courts, and half the new hard courts, were swarming with diminutive players and their parents on Sunday, September 7, 2008. Horseshoe Bay and the USTA Jump Start program sponsored the final event of some nine regional children's tournaments, an invitational competition for the winners of local club tournaments. The Roddick courts' bleachers were filled and several large trophies beckoned as kids warmed up in the midday heat. Their even-younger counterparts practiced hitting spongy practice balls over portable pint-sized nets on the new hard courts. Elise and I were playing nearby, but stopped when we realized the kids were using us as examples of bad form.

If anyone has photos and results from this event, please email them to me.

Thomas, Servise, Futrell Succeed in Mason

At least three area girls joined several Marble Falls & Burnet adults who placed first or second in the popular Dr. Pepper Open held in Mason July 17-20, 2008.

Lana Thomas won the girls 18 singles. Laura Servise won the girls 16 singles and 18 mixed doubles. (and more; see below). Kyleigh Ann Futrell, fresh from making champs in Waco, placed second in the girls 16 doubles. (I don't know who the girls' partners were.)

If someone has more information about the matches, or has photos, email them to me before July 26 and I'll add to this post.

Futrell, Still make Champs

I just learned from Sallye Johnson that Hannah Still and Kyleigh Ann Futrell achieved Champ status at the recent July Waco tournament. Congratulations! Sorry I don't have more details until someone sends them (hint, hint).

HSB USTA Juniors Tourney Set for Big Success

170 juniors will compete in the Horseshoe Bay Resort Red Clay Classic Junior Open held July 25-27, 2008, at Horseshoe Bay Tennis Center. It promises to be the most successful in a series of USTA sanctioned juniors tournaments, and will offer Super Champs-Level 4 Standing points and Champs-Level 2 Ranking points.

Registration closed a week ago, so it's too late to sign up to play, but there should be a lot of fine tennis to watch. I won't be able to post the results until September, so go to the official USTA tournament website to find out how your favorite junior fared in each of his or her matches.

And don't mess with Ed Price, Aland's father, who will be officiating. He doesn't take prisoners.

Fall Juniors Clinics at HSB Tennis Center

The well-known Horseshoe Bay Tennis Center Juniors clinics continue in the Fall of 2008, beginning with a new series led by Aland Price and Michelle Stallard. Their training programs have produced many competitive Texas juniors, and the Fall clinics will fill fast.

These and other highly successful juniors programs have a special place in regional tennis. Michelle and Aland have created a wide array of clinics, private lesson opportunities, conditioning programs, leagues, team support, and elite training for junior players of all ages and levels. Andy Roddick Foundation Launches Tennis Program for Hill Country Youth

Ashley Stallard Makes 12s Superchamps!

(Information from Sallye Johnson)

Our Horseshoe Bay/Highland Lakes juniors continue to distinguish themselves, led this time by Ashley Stallard. Luke Lawson Champs Up

(Information from Sallye Johnson)

Luke Lawson, a man with a tennis mission, won the ZAT in San Angelo earlier in November to qualify for the 12s Champs at nine years of age! Luke not only "champed up," he also won the tournament, giving him twice the required points. He defeated Rahil Patel of Abilene 6-0, 6-0 and went on to defeat Mac McCullough of Dallas 6-2, 6-1. Midland's Tyler Gilland, the #3 seeded player, gave Luke his toughest competition, but Luke won 7-5, 4-6, 10-6 to qualify for the finals where he defeated William Flanagan, the #2 seed, from Abilene 6-3, 6-2.

Lana Thomas "Champs Up"

Lana Thomas made the finals of the Round Rock ZAT September 1-2, giving her enough points to reach the Champ level of juniors competition. She joins current area Champs players Levi Cockrill (boys 16s, Burnet), Hannah Mayfield (girls 16s), and Ashley Stallard (girls 12s).

Faith Academy Girls win State!

Girls Clean Up, Boys Hold Their Own

(From Sallye Johnson)

The Marble Falls Faith Academy Girls Tennis Team, coached by Michelle Stallard, squeaked by Brownsville Livingway to win the 2007 Texas Division 2A tennis championship of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS). The final tournament was held in Waco April 20-21. Edd Burleson, TAPPS president, presented the championship plaque and medals to the Team (see photos below).

The Faith Academy Flames finished with 19 team points. Brownsville Livingway was a close second with 18.5 points. Tyler East Texas and Longview Trinity came next with 14.5 and 10.5, respectively.

Kristin Bohannon and Caitlin Schnorrenberg contributed greatly to the team score by finishing 2nd in girls doubles, as did Lana Thomas, who placed 3rd in girls singles. Other points were added by Hannah Still, who won her opening match but lost to the eventual champion, Melanie Fortenberry, and Deana Hoover.

The Flames boys team played only three competitors but managed to tie for 7th place with 7 points. Ryan Johnson (singles) and Chase Penner and Clayton Bridges (doubles) made the quarterfinals. In the end, Dallas Fairhill won the boys division, followed by Dallas-Arlington St. Albans, Kerrville Our Lady of the Hills, and Frisco Legacy. (Note the pattern of much larger schools, which makes both the boys' and girls' achievements even more impressive.)

The Division 2A matches were played on the Baylor University Streich courts. Ed Price, father of new Horseshoe Bay head pro Aland Price, officiated at the site.

For complete match results, click here to go to the official USTA tournament site, or visit the TAPPS website and follow the appropriate links.

HSB Tennis Garden (there are 12 courts there somewhere). Don't you feel sorry for people who have to play on ordinary courts?

Overpopulation can spoil a good thing. There goes the Barton Creek salamander habitat.

Something got the crowd's attention. Probably Ann.

A well-organized team.

A well- . . . well, a team.

A team in themselves (and pretty smug about it).
