Thomas, Servise, Futrell Succeed in Mason
At least three area girls joined several Marble Falls & Burnet adults who placed first or second in the popular Dr. Pepper Open held in Mason July 17-20, 2008.
Lana Thomas won the girls 18 singles. Laura Servise won the girls 16 singles and 18 mixed doubles. (and more; see below). Kyleigh Ann Futrell, fresh from making champs in Waco, placed second in the girls 16 doubles. (I don't know who the girls' partners were.)
If someone has more information about the matches, or has photos, email them to me before July 26 and I'll add to this post.
Futrell, Still make Champs
I just learned from Sallye Johnson that Hannah Still and Kyleigh Ann Futrell achieved Champ status at the recent July Waco tournament. Congratulations! Sorry I don't have more details until someone sends them (hint, hint).
HSB USTA Juniors Tourney Set for Big Success
170 juniors will compete in the Horseshoe Bay Resort Red Clay Classic Junior Open held July 25-27, 2008, at Horseshoe Bay Tennis Center. It promises to be the most successful in a series of USTA sanctioned juniors tournaments, and will offer Super Champs-Level 4 Standing points and Champs-Level 2 Ranking points.
Registration closed a week ago, so it's too late to sign up to play, but there should be a lot of fine tennis to watch. I won't be able to post the results until September, so go to the official USTA tournament website to find out how your favorite junior fared in each of his or her matches.
And don't mess with Ed Price, Aland's father, who will be officiating. He doesn't take prisoners.
Fall Juniors Clinics at HSB Tennis Center
The well-known Horseshoe Bay Tennis Center Juniors clinics continue in the Fall of 2008, beginning with a new series led by Aland Price and Michelle Stallard. Their training programs have produced many competitive Texas juniors, and the Fall clinics will fill fast.
These and other highly successful juniors programs have a special place in regional tennis. Michelle and Aland have created a wide array of clinics, private lesson opportunities, conditioning programs, leagues, team support, and elite training for junior players of all ages and levels. For all the information, schedules, and application materials, call (830) 598-2591 or email mstallard@hsbresort.com.
Andy Roddick Foundation Launches Tennis Program for Hill Country Youth
In a Castle Rock press release dated May 1, 2008, Dave Holder wrote that Dr. Lawrence Roddick, Director of Youth Programs for the Andy Roddick Foundation (ARF), has just announced the launch of the foundation's first tennis programs in the Texas Hill Country. The programs are in cooperation with the Boys and Girls Club of the Highland Lakes, and will begin June 2, 2008, at the Marble Falls Middle School courts. The Andy Roddick Youth Tennis Program developed in September, 2007, from the vision of Rene Lacoste, the experience of the Roddick family, and financial support from the Rene Lacoste Foundation, the USTA Tennis & Education Foundation, and the ARF. With the launch of these programs, ARF begins the fundraising campaign to build the Andy Roddick Foundation International Tennis Center at CastleRock Texas in Cottonwood Shores.
"I am in a position to make a difference, and feel a certain responsibility to make one of my goals contributing positively to my communities," said Andy Roddick, founder of ARF. "By helping at-risk and underprivileged children through my foundation, we can make this goal a reality."
After turning professional in 2000, it took Andy only one year to turn his sights off the court and onto his community. In 2001, he began the Andy Roddick Foundation, a charity dedicated to "Helping Children Today for Tomorrow." The goal of the foundation is to improve the quality of life and enhance educational and economic opportunities for all children based on the principles of respect for family, education and morality.
The programs will focus on children 6 to 10 years old and will be led by husband-wife team Mark and Julie Moran of Marble Falls. Mark currently coaches the Marble Falls Middle School tennis teams. Julie, a former collegiate competitor and a certified teacher, will assist Mark in the summer programs and then assume the reigns in the fall.
The Boys and Girls Club offers programs and services that promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling a sense of competence, usefulness, belonging and influence. The Boys and Girls Club of the Highland Lakes is now nearly 1,000 members strong and offers a safe place for youth to learn and grow while having fun.
"It is so important to employ a wide variety of activities to inspire and motivate such a huge variety of young personalities! Tennis is a sport that can be incorporated for the rest of their lives regardless of economic status. It will significantly improve the physical health of some children," said Deedy Atkins, Boys & Girls Club Unit Director.
John Racz, Board of Directors and Resource and Development Chairman added, "The summer tennis program fits in beautifully with our current goals and programs."
Dr. Ryder Warren, Superintendent of M.F.I.S.D., commented that "The Marble Falls School District gladly offers the middle school facilities for such a worthwhile endeavor."
To sign up for the ARF summer tennis programs contact: The Boys and Girls Club of the Highland Lakes at (830) 798-2582. Participant registration for current Boys and Girls Club members will be held May 5-9, 2008, at the Boys and Girls Club facility at 1701 Broadway Street in Marble Falls. Nonmembers will register May 12-16.
